Seven things about me

By Goddess in Progress ·   March 20th, 2008

Forgive the sparse posting this week. I’m feeling a little out of sorts, a little behind on things. Up to my nose in laundry. I’m also discovering that I have a potentially finite amount of blogging energy, some of which is now taken up by my twice-weekly posts over at How Do You Do It?. Anyways, things are going well here, just not feeling particularly inspired. Doesn’t help that, though they say it’s the first day of Spring, it’s 43 degrees, windy, and raining here. Bleh. So, to have something to write about, I’m going to borrow from LauraC and do the “Seven random facts” meme. Here’s a few totally un-twin-related facts about yours truly:

  1. I play the double bass. It used to be such a big part of my life that I even started college as a music (education) major. The major lasted one semester, and I haven’t taken the poor thing out of its case in nearly three years. Maybe next year I’ll find another orchestra to play with.
  2. I was the Rush Chair (OK, VP Membership) of my sorority in college. I never imagined I would join a sorority, much less encourage others to do the same. And yet, knowing the person I am now, it makes perfect sense. But I never wore pearls to class, thankyouverymuch.
  3. I was an extra in an episode of Law & Order. I’m at the very end, in the courtroom, in a blue suit. I was a “court reporter.” Shockingly, I’m not listed in the credits. :-) But spending the day with a room full of professional extras was… enlightening. A weird bunch of folks, let me tell you.
  4. I’m allergic to melons. Melons, of all things! Canteloupe, honeydew, watermelon, whatever. It was a late-developing allergy (didn’t start until I was a teenager), and it’s not severe, but still. Have you ever tried to get a fruit salad at a store or restaurant without melons in it? Harder than you’d think.
  5. On 11/11/11, I will turn 33. My dad and I figured this out when I was like 8 years old, and I’ve been looking forward to it ever since. Weird that it’s less than four years away now… what will I do after that?!
  6. I have 30 blood-related first cousins. Not counting step-cousins, cousins by marriage, or any of that. I remember being very proud at the age of 9 when I realized I could name them all. I don’t understand people whose Christmas involves fewer than 45 people in the house.
  7. I love spreadsheets. Yes, spreadsheets. Nothing better than a well-organized, sorted, perfectly aligned spreadsheet. You should have seen my wedding spreadsheet, with tabs for the guest list, seating chart, meal choices, thank yous… I have a majorly anal-retentive side.

Alrighty, part of this deal is that I now get to tag 7 other people to do the same thing! I hereby tag Beverly, Carrie, Giovanna, Jenni, Darrah, Tracey, and Krissy. (And anyone else who wants to do it, just leave a comment so I can link to you!)

I was also rush chair of my fraternity. At Caltech, it’s 75% men so we had co-ed fraternities. Except they’re not really fraternities because everyone gets into one and we call it a House. You see, nerds create their own social hierarchy as well.

And before you say “you went to a college that was 75% men, you are lucky!” we have a saying – The odds are good but the goods are odd.

DAMN I forgot my most random fact. I have a bionic ear and I have been meaning to blog about it for almost 3 years now.

PS. I had a wedding spreadsheet exactly like yours!

PPS. I have an excel spreadsheet called Laura.xls that contains my life. Books to read, Work to do, Current life to do, etc. I would be lost without it.

Ooooooooh I am tagged! An excuse to write about me and only me! So exciting!

You were a dang good rush chair. I will always think of it as “rush chair,” by the way … none of this “VP of Membership” stuff for me! :)

Regarding #3, have you seen the HBO show Extras? If so, my favorite episode was the one with Daniel Radcliffe. Good to know that in real life, extras are also wacky.

Ditto on the wedding spreadsheet, baby!

My birthday is the day after yours 11/12. And on 11/12/13, I’ll be 36, which, if you add up those numbers (11+12+13) is 36. I guess, since you tagged me, I’ll have to write about this as one of my “facts”.

wait, wedding spreadsheets w/that info make you anal??? trust me, a week out from big day, it’s the only thing keeping me sane. biggest wedding-related fight we’ve had was when i found out that he was keeping a separate list and so not all his invitees were on my list… it was bad.
and you were an awesome rush chair.
