Back from the beach

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   August 31st, 2008

Ahh…

We had a really, really great time down in Virginia with our friends.  We hadn’t seen each other since last June, when they came up to Massachusetts and threw me a baby shower.  Amanda and I were both pregnant, her due date being about 6-8 weeks after mine (how is it that we didn’t take a picture of the two of us pregnant together?!).  Until this week, we hadn’t met their second son, and they hadn’t met our kids.  Marcus and M were friends and post-college roommates, so there’s something nostalgic and a little funny about taking a picture of the two of them, nearly eight years after I met them both, playing with their kids on the beach.  My, how things change.

Anyways, the travel was a little hairy, as might be expected.  Unfortunately, we did not have a direct flight, so it was two short hops.  On the way down, we left for the airport at 4:30am for our 6:30 flight, but then had a nearly four-hour layover in Newark.  Joy of joys.  But we made it, they fell asleep on the drive from the airport, and we put them to bed early.  Whew.  After an enormous grocery run, we threw some meat on the grill, chatted it up like the “old” days when we practically all lived in the same apartment, and called it a night.

The first few days were glorious and sunny, which meant we weren’t too bothered with the windy, cloudy, drizzly days in the middle.  We played at the beach, found a mall and a park, and even took turns staying home with the kids so each couple could have a date night. Wohoo!  We stayed up too late watching the DNC, and got up early with all four kids.  M and I took the kids for a mini road trip to meet my blog-buddies in Williamsburg, which was just as fun as I hoped it would be.

The kids did really well.  They stuck pretty well to their normal schedule, slept fine in the Pack & Plays, and were only a little clingy.  Their different reactions to the ocean were funny, if not at all surprising.  Daniel clung to me or M for dear life, sometimes trying to climb even higher up my shoulder.  He did not like the waves one little bit.  He was content to sit on the towel farther from the water, though sometimes crawled off to check things out.  Rebecca wanted to walk all the time, and get closer to the waves.  She laughed when they washed up on her and complained loudly when I took her away from them.

By the end of the week, though, I was ready to come home.  Ready to sleep in my delicious new mattress instead of the covered rock that was in our room at the beach house.  Ready to be in my own space with my own routines.  We had a really fun time with our friends, but I’m almost always ready for trips to be over.

Travel home was also rough.  This time the flights weren’t so early, but the first one was delayed enough to wipe out our entire would-be two-hour layover at JFK.  We bolted off our first plane, went one gate over, and immediately boarded the second.  Only to sit on it for probably an hour before taking off for a 40-minute flight.  Rebecca, strangely enough, fell asleep just before our first flight landed, but slept through all of the jostling and plane-changing, until we were at our cruising altitude on the second flight.  Daniel slept much of the first flight, but it wasn’t enough to keep him from screaming for much of the second.  Sigh.  We were those people.

In the end, one of our three bags missed the connection, but it was delivered by this morning.  We made it home in the same number of pieces in which we left, and all was well.  Our house looks like a tornado hit it, so I’m sorting and unpacking and doing laundry.  Our friends were able to keep the house for the extra two days of the holiday weekend, and I was a little sad that our flights were already booked and we couldn’t stay with them.  But on the other hand, we came home and still had two days to recover before M goes back to work and I’m back to the daily grind.  Worked out pretty well.

Without further ado, a few of my favorites out of the nearly 400 frames I snapped on our week away:

Last day

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (4)·   August 29th, 2008

It’s our last day here on the beach, and after a few cloudy and drizzly days, today is perfectly warm and sunny. It has been a nice trip, and I’m glad today is a good beach day, but I am just about ready to be back home. Back to my familiar places and routines. I can’t wait to go through all of my (300+) pictures and write about my kids’ introduction to the ocean and their very different reactions to it. But, for now, we’re confined to the iPhone version, complete with cameraphone pics and the limitations I typing with my thumbs.

Below: Daniel gets a little more bold on the beach, and Rebecca enjoys one of the perks of vacation, naked lunch after a morning in the sand.

Worlds collide

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   August 26th, 2008

Another short iPhone entry, but I couldn’t not mention our most excellent meetup today. At morning nap time, we piled the kids in the car and drove up I-64 to Williamsburg. And who did we find in the kids’ section waiting for us? The positively delightful Cheryl, Darren, and Sarah, my blog-buddies! (Go visit twinfatuation.blogspot.com for pics and story, as mine are currently trapped on my camera.)

We had an awesome time visiting and getting lunch and ogling the candy store. We couldn’t stay forever, and at PM nap time, back we went to the car and three of us fell asleep on the way home after having so much fun with our new friends.

I’ll try to talk more about it when I don’t have to type with my thumbs, but just wanted to pop in and say thanks to Cheryl and family. What a treat!

Hello from Virginia

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (2)·   August 25th, 2008

We are having a great time on vacation so far. The travel was a little hairy, but we made it. The house we’ve rented is working out well, and spending time with friends we don’t see often is a blast. Only a quick update for today, since we opted to bring the Wii instead of a laptop and I’m making use of WordPress for the iPhone…

As is required on a vacation like this, we’re eating and drinking ourselves silly. Our house is perfectly located across the street from the beach, which removes a lot of the hassle from bringing the kids there between naps and meals. Not surprisingly, Daniel is not a fan of being near the waves, while Rebecca was ready to jump right in.

I’m taking plenty of pictures, but with the whole laptop thing, you’ll just have to wait until we get home for the good ones. For now, just the iPhone pics from this evening…

(P.S. Head over to www.mommyesq.com and say congrats, because her babies were scheduled to come today! Haven’t seen an update, but I hope everything went well.)

Last-minute prep

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (8)·   August 22nd, 2008

Our flight leaves tomorrow morning at the crack of dawn.  So, naturally, I haven’t started packing yet!  But I do have lists.  Oh boy, do I have lists.  I have lists of lists.  They haven’t made it to spreadsheet form yet, but the day is young.  I’ve got a packing list for the kids, a packing list for me and M, a packing list for our carry-on.  A list for groceries.  A master to-do list.  A list for the dog, who is being dropped off at a friend’s house.  Said friend is really saving me, since my last-minute call to the kennel yielded a new response: they were full until Monday.  But we leave Saturday.  Doh!  Thankfully, this friend thought it would be fun to have a dog for the weekend, so lucky me and lucky Winnie!  But, in the meantime, she needs a bath and I need to find her portable crate.

I really need to make an effort not to over-pack.  I need to think minimal. Not my strong suit, but I’ll try.  Especially with all of the fees the airlines are so eager to charge these days.  But we have three tickets and are therefore entitled to 3 checked bags.  Thank god our friends are driving and have extra Pack & Plays…

Alright, enough talking.  Time for laundry!  And packing!  And giving the dog a bath!  Wohoo!

Oh, and the house we’re renting supposedly has wireless internet access, so I’ll see if I can’t bring a laptop and post updates from the beach.  I’ll bring my camera’s USB cable and take pictures of my frosty beverages.  It’ll be awesome.

I need a vacation

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   August 20th, 2008

It’s been a rough couple of days over here.  It started with the whole Toys-R-Us debacle on Monday.

Tuesday was not a ton better.  It started off with a bang, as the dog decided to find poop in the yard (not her own), eat it, and then throw up all over my first floor.  Delightful.  I’m so glad I took that 6 years to convince M we should get a dog.  I then had to go to the doctor for my foot.  We still don’t know what’s wrong with it, but now it hurts more than before.  The doctor said he’d take an x-ray and see me back in 3 weeks.  Lovely.  I’ll limp until then.  Had a nice lunch with a wonderful friend of mine who is 30+ weeks pregnant with her first baby, despite Daniel throwing his sandwich all over the floor.

Daniel then completely skipped his afternoon nap, and was not a happy camper later in the afternoon while the plumber was here (again!), trying to make my bathtub drain properly.  But I had my monthly twin club meeting last night, which was lots of fun (and blog-tastic, with Mommy, Esq. – 36 weeks pregnant, c-section on Monday!!! – and Nancy in attendance).  I stayed entirely too late, but it was worth it.  Until I got pulled over on the way home.  For a damn expired license plate.  So guess what I got to do all morning today? Yay, RMV and unpaid Boston parking tickets.

Hopefully, though, this is all just to make me appreciate the upcoming week even more.  Because on Saturday morning, we leave (at the crack of dawn) for a week in Virginia Beach with some dear friends and their two kids.  We rented a house on the beach, how cool will this be?!  One 10-month-old, two 12-month-olds, and one nearly-3-year-old.  And anywhere between four and six adults, depending on the day.  Sure, the trip presents some new logistical challenges, since it’s the first time we’re not primarily staying with family who can shop ahead and all of that.  But I think it will be great, and if not totally relaxing, at least lots of fun.  And if we can get the stars to align just so, I might even be able to meet up with Cheryl!  Blogosphere and real world collide!

Now, I just have to do laundry… and make a grocery list… and pack… and make a reservation for the dog at the kennel….  oy.

In completely unrelated, but incredibly cute, news… Rebecca is getting a big kick out of playing peekaboo by herself:

Where's Rebecca?

Where's Rebecca?

There she is!

There she is!

Ask the Daddy

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (9)·   August 19th, 2008

Alright, blogosphere, I’m asking for your help.

If you read How Do You Do It?, my other blog, you may have noticed we’ve had a couple of daddies do guest posts recently.  I asked M if he wanted to join in.  Somewhat to my surprise, he actually is more than willing, and even somewhat intrigued by the idea.  As someone who isn’t normally into blogging, writing, or really much of any concentrated self-reflection, however, he is drawing a blank on what to write about.  [I don't mean to suggest he is not one to be thoughtful, I only mean he's not the journal-about-my-feelings type...]

So, want to help a daddy out?  Leave a comment with a possible topic, or even a question or set of questions I could use to “interview” him!  What have you always wanted to know about the mysterious Mr. M?  I can’t make any promises, but if you send me some interesting questions, I bet you’ll get interesting answers.

I don’t think we’re going to turn him into a regular blogger, but I’ll see if I can’t squeeze a guest post out of him from time to time.

I just don’t want it that badly

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (11)·   August 18th, 2008

Oy, what an afternoon.

So, obviously the kiddos had a birthday recently.  My mom wanted to get them a good present, and decided on this outdoor playhouse.  Looks like fun, durable, good for a number of years.  Great gift.

Except, she lives 1,000 miles away from us.  So, she figured she’d order it online and have it shipped.

Except, shipping was anywhere from $80 to $150.  So, she figured she’d buy it from Sears and have me pick it up at the store.

Except, they were all out of stock because it’s the end of the season.  So, she finally found it at a Toys R Us in Manchester, New Hampshire.  About 45 minutes from my house.  I said I could drive up there this afternoon post-nap, so she called the store and had them set one aside.  Of course, it’s not like they could have sent it to a store closer to me, and of course they wouldn’t let her pay over the phone.  So, off I go, 45 minutes with the kids in the car to buy the present my mom wants to get them.  Fine.

Except, maybe two exits onto the highway and traffic is all but stopped.  At 3:45 in the afternoon, nowhere near the city.  And Rebecca is hungry/thirsty but refusing her sippy cup of milk.  And Daniel is throwing crackers on the floor.  So they’re both screaming.  I’m regretting the trip already, and I’ve only been on the road 15 minutes. I’m considering just turning around and calling my mom and telling her to think of some other gift.  But I call M, who checks the traffic report, and it looks like it should clear up.  Fine, whatever, I’m already on the road.  After an hour, we finally make it to the Toys R Us in New Hampshire.

Except, the woman at the service desk keeps calling the guy to check the customer hold room, and he’s not picking up the intercom.  And they can’t for the life of them figure out how to spell or say my last name.  Fine, whatever.  25 minutes later (oh, and the kids are no longer in their carseats, but now in the stroller… not a whole lot happier), he finally wheels out this enormous box and I pay for it, and he helps me out to the car.

Except, as we walk up to my van, we both know it.  The box just isn’t going to fit.  Even with the seats down, even if I didn’t have the kids with me (it was tempting to just leave them there and come back later), it was too big.  He asks me if I have a truck (um, no), or if I want him to try to strap it to the top of the car (um, I’m 40 miles from home, I’m not driving back on local roads at 25 miles per hour).  I thank him for his effort, but apologize and say I have to walk back into the store and return it, less than five minutes after I bought it.  It was all I could do not to burst into tears.  The kids beat me to it.

Everyone back in the car, time to go home.  I called my mom to let her know what happened, and she started talking about my uncle’s truck and waiting until it comes back in stock at Christmas time.  I’m not sure why she’s so attached to this play house, but frankly, I could give a shit.  If it shows up on my doorstep, great.  We’ll love it.  But there’s no way in hell I’m crossing state lines for it again.

We finally arrived back home, more than two hours after we left.  The kids had been strapped into either their carseat or their stroller the whole time.  I think they were just relieved to climb around the kitchen while I got them some dinner.

Thanks, mom, but maybe next time just get them a DVD or something.

They’re definitely his kids

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (4)·   August 18th, 2008

Sometimes it takes outside eyes to notice things about your kids.  When you’re so close all the time, it can be hard to see the proverbial forest for the trees.  That, and I think I just don’t see them the way other people do.  I can’t, I’m their mother.

Prime example, the way every single person who sees Daniel says “wow, he looks exactly like M!”  And while exactly may be an exaggeration DSC_0813(Daniel has my nose, while Rebecca has M’s), it must be a fairly strong resemblance since almost everyone says the same thing.  Me?  I don’t see it.  Like, at all.  Well, OK, once I saw a picture of M as a toddler, and then I definitely saw the resemblance.  But the M that I know now?  Nope.  He just looks like M to me.  And Daniel just looks like Daniel.

With Rebecca in the looks department, there’s less consensus.  M says she looks a little like me, my mom thinks she looks like M’s sister.  And I think she’s just funny as hell, and her eye and hair color change depending on the day’s light.

Last night, though, I was talking to a friend of ours on the phone and describing Rebecca’s current mobility status.  She loves to walk while holding on to both of your hands.  If you take one of your hands away (wrench it out of her fingers), she’s perfectly capable of walking and holding onto only one of your hands, but she hates it.  DSC_0205She would much, much rather have both.  I don’t think she wants to walk until she’s totally comfortable with the idea, and she was the same way with crawling.  She took her sweet time mastering each little component, and though everyone was certain she was mere moments away from crawling, she worked on it for a solid six weeks before finally doing it on her own.

My friend just laughed.  “Oh my god,” she said, “she’s just like her dad!”  And it’s so true.  M fears change.  Change involves newness and risk.  What if it’s worse than what I already have or already know how to do?  Better to stick with the devil you know.  It took him over a year to buy a new car, several years to change jobs, and we won’t even talk about how long it took him to get around to proposing to yours truly.

So, M, there you go.  No more joking about the milkman.  They’re definitely yours.

Cute as can be

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   August 15th, 2008

I haven’t been successful in capturing it on video, but I had to make note of some of my very favorite super-adorable things the kids do right now.

Daniel is a chatterbox, and I love his sweet little voice.  He’s got quite a range, going from gravelly to shrieking and practically yodeling, and sometimes just talking softly.  The yodeling is clearly for his own entertainment, he loves to make his voice do funny things.  When he’s climbing the stairs or otherwise moving and concentrating, he often does this funny, growling “word” that would probably be “Gof” if I tried to spell it.  But it almost sounds like he’s chewing something. It makes me laugh almost every time. Another “word” of his is “dob”.  As in “dob a-dob a-dob.”  No idea what it means, if anything, but it’s friggin adorable.  I also think that, at least 50% of the time that it seems like he’s waving, he’s actually making the sign for “light!”  One last thing: he apparently is part-dog.  He just loves carrying things around in his mouth when he crawls or climbs.

Rebecca, when she isn’t insisting that you help her walk, has become quite a little bookworm.  It has happened a number of times, but I’d say yesterday she sat for a solid 25 minutes, carefully turning the pages of one book or another.  This morning it was Pat the Bunny, and she took that little pointer finger, turned the page, and patted that darn bunny.  So small and perfect.  She also now makes funny faces just for the sake of being silly.  She kind of juts out her chin and puckers her lips, making kind of a funny “oooh” sound.  Silly girl.  And god help you if she decides she wants you to help her walk and you don’t get up fast enough.  Ooh, 12-month-old temper tantrum!
