Well-Earned Margarita
Is it just me, or has the second half of winter just completely kicked everyone’s ass? I got a little cocky the first couple of months, thinking we were doing OK on illnesses and getting out of the house and all of that. And then February happened. And it was so very unpleasant.
I don’t know how much of it was the string of illnesses, how much of it was the snow that made outdoor play an impossibility, how much of it was simply an age (18 month) thing, or if it was just a perfect shitstorm of all three. I suspect that’s pretty much the case.
At any rate, we started talking a week or two ago about doing a mom’s night out with a few of friends of mine. Get the kids (more or less) in bed and run out the door. Last night was that night, and not a moment too soon as several of our kids had their worst bedtimes in months in the minutes before we bolted out the door. (My son included, he had a positively nuclear meltdown at bedtime last night.)
Four of us went out, which is a nice number. Big enough to feel like a gathering, small enough that the table doesn’t fragment into smaller conversations. One margarita was enough to make me nearly cross-eyed, but a little food, water, and time had me back to reality well before it was time to go home. We sat at our table as long as we pleased, with no messy or cranky toddlers to attend to. And yes, we mostly talked about kids, parenting, preschool, and the like. Putting a false restriction on child-related topics would have been silly. Parenting toddlers and twins is what we have in common, and we’re all (more or less) full-time stay-at-home moms. Kids are what we do.
Anyways, getting out on a clear night as the winter is finally starting to break up was exactly what the doctor ordered. So a big thanks to Rebecca, Allison, and Jane. We must do it again sometime.

Congrats on surviving! We feel like the only people who did not get creamed this winter in terms of illnesses, probably because we had *finally* paid into that mythical day care bank of illnesses and can reap some rewards.
(I organize a monthly Moms Night Out and our last meetup was 12 women on my deck… SO very necessary!)

I think we should make it a regular monthly event—it was just what the doctor ordered! (If my doctor suggested things like margaritas and melted cheese as a treatment for anything).

Those Moms Nights Out are so needed – and the dads usually can appreciate that! I know my hubby is always like “GET OUT” because I come back in a better mood
And, like you said, it’s important to go with other moms and not necessarily restrict the kid talk. Comiserating often leads to helpful suggestions and, ultimately, gets you talking about what you LOVE about being a mom.

Glad you had a fun time! I love that you honestly stated that a “restriction on child-related topics would have been silly”. Everytime I have a Moms night out with my twin moms, someone says “Ok, no more talking about kids.” Hello, I am a sahm and kids/twins/toddlers is what I do all day. I hate that comment and then everyone is scrambling for something witty to say that doesn’t involve naptime.
Hmmm, rant over. Maybe I need a margarita:)

I organize a monthly moms happy hour and it is the best medicine. Sometimes it’s a large group, other times it’s just two of us…either way, it’s a night away from the mess, a night in a clean shirt and a night where someone else waits on us for a change.
You should definitely make a habit out of it!

Moms nights out are the best! Don’t they feel dizzyingly liberating? Like, “I remember doing things like this in my past life!” It is just what the doctor ordered, indeed. Glad you had a good time.
