Gramps in the house

I’ve got a post up about Rebecca and dresses (and barrettes!) on HDYDI.

Check out my Q&A post and give me some blogging inspiration, or see what I’ve been up to on the sewing front on my new blog.

Among any number of things Cheryl and I seem to have in common, we both had a grandparent visit this weekend.  My dad travels non-stop for work, but sadly seems to have no clients in Boston so he doesn’t often get a chance to pass through.  This week was thankfully an exception, and when the conference he attended was over, he stayed in town for the weekend.

Gramps Visit

May I just pause and say three cheers for Skype?  It’s hard when your kids’ grandparents live a thousand or more miles away and you only get to see them a few times a year. But with the advent of video-chatting (free, no less!), my kids not only recognized the Gramps they hadn’t seen in the flesh since Christmas, but warmed up to him almost immediately and played happily for the rest of the weekend. Oh sure, part of it is increased memory skills and decreased stranger anxiety.  But I have to believe that our semi-regular video chats have made a huge contribution.

Anyways, the kids had an awesome time playing with my dad.  Rebecca, in particular, became his new BFF and seemed to prefer him to either me or M.  It was beyond cute.  There was much playing and giggling. There was endless sidewalk chalk (including my dad, the former math teacher, attempting to teach Rebecca the Pythagorean Theorem and Pi). There was lots of swinging and a nifty new bench my dad found at Lowe’s.

Gramps Visit

Speaking of Lowe’s, he was there because he decided his project for the weekend was to paint our newly-remodled mudroom.  He and I primed it while the kids napped.  And in the evening, when he practically shoved M and me out the door so we could have an adult dinner to ourselves, he did the rest of the painting himself.  That’s right: free babysitting AND painting!  Hooray for dad!

Gramps Visit

Anyways, it was a really nice visit, and I only wish we could manage them more often.  We’ll see him again over the summer when we go to Chicago, and in between, we’ll rely on our buddy Skype.

OK, Liz, can you send Gramps my way, please? Free babysitting AND painting? Are you kidding?! I’m so glad you guys had a nice visit. Grandparents are the best, and Skype is also the best. Jack, Johnny and I couldn’t have survived without it during the month Jack and I spent in Taiwan!

Oh Goddess, seriously, each picture out does the next….just when I thought it couldn’t get any more adorable then the one of Grandpa holding R & D’s hands as they lead himn down the sidewalk, then you sucker punched me in the sentimental stomach with the rear view of the bench shot.

Simply precious. We DO have so much in common…maybe we’d better get to Skyping! ;)

Thanks so much for playing along with Makes My Monday!

Sounds like a fantastic visit! And it is tough having the grandparents so far away. We should try to video talk more often-good reminder.
The pics of them on the bench are just priceless. The one of Daniel and your Dad really made me smile!

A good Daddy takes care of his baby girl even when she is the Mommy and he is the Grandpa. I can’t believe how much I have been cared for by my parents since I have become a parent. They are pretty amazing…
