Preparation

I’m shifting into travel prep mode over here at Casa in Progress.  We leave on Wednesday for about two weeks in the great Midwest.  We’ll be all over the place, and between the 2+ hour plane flight and the 6+ hour drive to my mom’s place in Wisconsin, I decided it would be in all of our best interests to get the kids some headphones.

I also, ironically, bought a portable DVD player. Why ironic? Because I have one in my car. That I didn’t really want, and have never used. But a 6-hour drive is the ideal circumstance for such an amenity.  So, naturally, my car and it’s built-in DVD player will be 1,000 miles away. Sigh.

We borrowed headphones from a friend at the last minute for our recent trip to Florida. Daniel thought they were interesting, but seemed to miss the point. Rebecca liked holding onto them, but wanted nothing to do with them touching her head in any way. Ah well.

So, of course, I took a page from LauraC: practice.  I ordered some kid-sized headphones from Amazon and got some Backyardigans DVDs.  They normally watch an episode in the morning after breakfast, so today I told them we’d watch it on a special little TV with headphones.  Daniel was immediately game and put them right on.  Rebecca wanted to watch the show, but didn’t want the headphones.  Eventually, after watching most of the episode (Chichen-Itza Pizza, if you must know) in silence, she eventually agreed to put on the headphones and seemed to do quite well.

I think we’ll do another dry run tomorrow morning, and then hopefully they’ll be ready and willing to use them while we travel. Hooray!
