Daniel has a new obsession: washing his hands.
It kicked into high gear a few weeks ago when I bought an IKEA stepstool from a friend and put it in our downstairs bathroom. A bit of kid-friendly soap, and he was off to the races.
He goes in there at random times of day. He can spend 10-15 minutes playing with the faucets, the soap, and the light switches. Any time we are going to do anything, you will hear him say: “first I wash the hands.”
And while I think a lot of this is a delay/control tactic (a topic on which I will expand soon), I shouldn’t complain too much about this obsessive-compulsive tendency as we head into flu season.

So cute!
Apart from the wall colour, that’s the girls’ bathroom. Same stool, same soap, same everything!
Melody suddenly decided yesterday that she is now unable to wash her hands by herself. “It’s too HARD to do all the THINGS,” says Miss Drama Queen.

We have a similar problem in our house but it involves teeth. Aaron has an obsession with brushing his teeth, and reapplying toothpaste and running the brush under the faucet. We have taken to locking the bathroom doors! And while we continue to make strides with Potty-training Brady, we have flat-out stopped with Aaron because (whether it is his intention or not) he is too distracted by his teeth to do anything else in the bathroom. He will say “Potty” and as soon as we open the door, he is heading straight for the stool and the toothbrush!
ah, yes, i remember the hand washing fascination. they used to spend HOURS in the bathroom washing their hands. now they don’t want anything to do with it. the grass is always greener, isn’t it?
Intersting, so many manipulative tactics to look forward to in my future toddlers.

Emilia is into the hand-washing these days too, although not quite as much as Daniel from the way it sounds. She really likes the automatic, kid-level dispenser of the soap that doesn’t need water (hand sanitizer, I guess you’d call that) they have in the entrance to the child care area at our gym.
