Saturday Snapshot – Halloween Preview

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   October 17th, 2009

Again with the random blogging PR perks, I got a tip that the Stone Zoo was hosting some early Halloween festivities this weekend!  Among other things, there were trick-or-treat tables set up along the zoo path, so the kids got to practice the “trick or treat” “thank you” and “Happy Halloween” sequence that we’ve been talking up.  Oh, and we got to preview this year’s costumes.  They were a big hit.

Early trick-or-treat

Daniel is actually wearing the same pirate costume from last year. It was really big on him back then, but he can still fit into it now.  Rebecca was thrilled with her new butterfly outfit.

For any area folks that missed it (I assume it will be a washout with tomorrow’s nasty forecast), the Franklin Park Zoo is doing a similar program next week.

And, lest I forget, we do have a winner for next weekend’s Halloween Town tickets.  Random.org had the honors of choosing:

Halloween Giveaway Winner

It’s Rebecca, hooray!  Of course, I saw her this afternoon and forgot to bring the tickets… but it’s not like we don’t see each other five times a week, anyways.  I’ll try to remember to bring them to COPE on Tuesday!

Halloween Town Giveaway!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   October 14th, 2009

One nice thing about making your contact info available on your blog is that you can sometimes get the inside scoop on some really cool things. (You also get very weird things, but we’re going to ignore those.) One of those very cool things fell into my lap recently, and I get to pass it along to you guys!

On Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, there is an awesome Halloween party/festival going on in Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center.  Halloween Town is sponsored by iParty and is a benefit for the Kids Fund at Boston Medical Center.  There’s all kinds of activities for toddlers all the way through older kids.  Trick or treating, a haunted mine, face painting and crafts, and even live performances, including the awesome Dan Zanes & Friends.  No joke, it looks like an absolute blast!

So, are you local? Do you want to go??  I have a family four-pack of tickets to give away!  Please leave a comment telling me what your kids are going to be for Halloween!  And for an extra entry, tweet all about it (don’t forget to include me, @etowndz, in the tweet) and leave an extra comment saying you’ve done just that.

Entries close this Friday (October 16) at 5PM, at which point I will pick a winner at random.

And if you don’t win, you can order tickets online and save $2 off the at-the-door price (kids and seniors are $14 in advance, adults are $17, and children 3 and under are free!).

Antidote

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (9)·   July 6th, 2009

I was going to write a kind of sad, cranky post about how I had an underwhelming Fourth of July and how it got me feeling incredibly homesick and determined to move back to Chicago sometime in the next few years. And, well, I sort of did and you can read it over at How Do You Do It? (notice the new URL!).

I was still cranky Sunday morning and into the early afternoon, despite a sunny day and a visit from Aunt R on a rare day off from the hospital. Still feeling disappointment. Nostalgia. And still emotionally and physically exhausted from our month of rain. And then, something crazy happened.

At nearly 5PM, we started talking about what to do for dinner. M knew exactly what he wanted: a roadside stand-type restaurant with fried seafood, burgers, and ice cream. Something on the ocean. He had a very clear picture in his mind of where he wanted to go. So we decided to pile into the van and try to find it.

The 5th of July

We headed east, toward the coast. I suggested we head toward my aunt’s house in Marblehead (the one person on my side of the family who doesn’t live in the Chicago area). She lives near the water and I had vague recollections of passing restaurants and shacks on the ocean on the way to her house. We gave her a call and said we were heading her way. She said her husband and son were at the beach at the end of their street, that it was low tide, and a perfect time to come by. Off we went.

We put our feet in the sand, though the kids weren’t thrilled about the cold waves on their feet. But the sun was warm, the ocean was calm. It was awesome.

At the beach, July 5

And to top it all off, my aunt pointed us toward the exact beachside shack M had seen in his mind’s eye. Fried seafood. Burgers. Onion Rings. Ice Cream. And some raspberry lime rickeys that Rebecca couldn’t get enough of.

Lime Rickey's

By the time we climbed back into the car to head home, it was an almost unheard-of 7:45pm. Normally lights-out time for the toddler set in this household. But you know what? Everyone was happy. They talked and sang songs and played peekaboo the entire way home.

The 5th of July

Got home and kids took a quick bath and were in bed shortly before 9PM, no too-late meltdowns.

It was a good day.

Happy Fourth!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (4)·   July 4th, 2009

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! No big plans at the in-Progress household. A BBQ later in the day at the lovely and talented Mommy Esq.‘s house, and then another year of kids in bed before it’s really dark out, and watching the Boston Pops on TV. We lead an exciting life, people.

Otherwise, not much to say here. M says I get to take this morning off (so why was I wide awake at 6:30am?), and it has finally stopped raining. YAHOO! I leave you with a few pictures of yesterday’s non-rainy activity: strawberry and raspberry picking at Smolak Farms. It was a hit, and the most meltdown-free morning I’ve had in a very, very long time. Just don’t try to take the strawberries away from Rebecca. Daniel preferred eating the raspberries straight off the bush.

Happy Father’s Day

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (1)·   June 21st, 2009

Father's Day, 2009

Hope everyone out there is having a lovely day.

As you can see, I went for the same gift as last year: a trio of framed photos spelling out DAD. Unlike last year, however, I was unable to cajole the kids into standing together with the letter A. Darn mobile toddlers. As it is, it’s a miracle I got these photos taken. There was about a one-hour window wherein it was a) not raining; b) M wasn’t home to ruin the “surprise”; and c) I actually had a functional camera.

Anyways, we’ve let him sleep in a bit. Now I’m off to make a little breakfast and deliver it upstairs, then I think we’ll hit the pool.

Happy Father’s Day, one and all!

Let the summer begin

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   May 24th, 2009

We’re only halfway through Memorial Day weekend, but we’ve already had a bit of fun and a bit of tantruming.  Both of the kids are having some rather defiant days, but hey, what can you do?  We’re also enjoying the good weather.  Friday was another hot day, so afternoon snack was a “special tweet!”: popsicles!  What a mess.

popsicles

But we were having so much fun outside that I decided dinner would be an impromptu backyard picnic.  While M isn’t a huge fan of eating amongst the bugs, he humored me.  Mmm, bratwurst…

impromptu picnic

There was practically uninteruppted playtime out in the yard from the time they woke up from their nap until we hauled them upstairs to the tub.  Yay for nice days!

Yesterday was a cranky day, but we all survived.  Today there was a threat of rain, so we decided to hit the aquarium.  It was not exactly deserted, and I was ever so glad to have our membership and just skip right past the long lines.  (And not feel bad about leaving quickly when meltdowns occurred.) It’s really hard to get good photos in the very low light of the indoor aquarium, but I managed a couple of good ones with the much beloved jellyfish exhibit.

And the kids enjoyed saying hello to the turtles in the first aid area.

Now they’re sleeping, I’m going to hit the sewing machine, and we’re going to hope that the threat of severe thunderstorms doesn’t ruin our afternoon barbeque plans with friends…. fingers crossed.

Bonus video, with a side of sacrilege

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (11)·   April 10th, 2009

For anyone not aware, Passover started on Wednesday night and continues through next week.  Eight days of no grains other than matzo, woo hoo.  Traditionally, you’d have kind of a fancy ritual dinner, with a bunch of symbolic items, tell the whole story of the flight from Egypt, and drink several glasses of wine. (What I would have done to go to the one at the White House, man…) Well, this year, we didn’t go down to Florida to visit my in-laws.  It was just me and M, my sister-in-law, and her boyfriend.  We didn’t even have a haggadah to read.  The best we could come up with was a My First Passover board book.  I’m not ready to read to my kids about rivers of blood, but it was surprisingly helpful in explaining the basic outline to my SIL’s boyfriend.

My First Passover

Anyways, we had a nice-ish dinner together after the kids went to bed, and that was fine.  But earlier in the evening, when they were having their own (not Kosher for Passover) dinner, I decided they were most certainly old enough to try their first matzo.  And I may have decided it was a video-worthy moment.  And my sister-in-law and I may have found some old wedding yarmulkes lying around the house.  And we may have found it entirely too funny.

We’re such good Jews. Now, I’m off to have another breakfast of matzo with honey. I’m just thinking about it and it’s already sticking to the roof of my mouth… :-)

Good Pesach to one and all.

Christmas Madness

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (1)·   December 26th, 2008

We leave this evening to fly home.  We’re almost entirely packed, four boxes full of toys and books have been dropped off to ship to Boston, and I’m enjoying a few last moments of calm before our insane travel night.  The flight is later in the evening than I would prefer, to begin with.  But it’s also already showing as delayed.  Could get interesting.

In the meantime, while I have a few minutes, I thought I’d give you a run-down of what Christmas Day was like this year.  While the addition of two toddlers makes it even more tricky, it’s not really all that different from what I’ve done for the last 15-20 years.

7:30AM – Kids wake up, we do the usual first-thing-in-the-morning routine.

8:00AM – My brother calls, is finally on his way to my dad’s house (despite the fact that I told him to get there at 8), and says he’ll stop for bagels on the way.  I can hear the precious minutes tick by, as I know we’re on a tight schedule.

8:45AM – Brother and sister-in-law arrive, we can finally have some breakfast and open presents.  Madness. Wrapping paper and boxes everywhere.  It’s actually not as over-the-top as it has been in the past, but my dad doesn’t really know the meaning of the word moderation.

9:30AM – Presents are done, rush the kids upstairs for their morning rest/nap.  No time to shower, just wash face, change clothes, and otherwise prepare to dash out the door as soon as we get the kids up.

10:15AM – Wake up kids, change into festive gear, head over to my mom’s sister’s house. All six of mom’s siblings (and their spouses and kids) are there.  Toddler nap schedules means we’ve skipped going to my mom’s house entirely. Seems like someone is always getting short-changed.

10:30AM – More food, people, and presents with mom’s family.  Kids eat their body weight in Harry & David pears, bananas, bacon, and more bagels.

12:15PM – Kids start to melt down. Lots of people, lots of noise, and nearly nap time.  Head back to dad’s house and put them into their cribs for a 1PM nap.

1:00PM – Kids are up for their nap.  M and I sit down, exhausted, and wonder how it could only be 1 in the afternoon.

3:30PM – Kids wake up, change into another adorable holiday outfit.  Dad’s family begins to arrive. Within an hour, there are easily 35 people in the house.  Cousins, aunts, and uncles galore. Fun to see my toddlers with older (like 3-6 years old) kids. Even more presents. Even more food.  Preschoolers putting on impromptu singing recitals and playing pool.  Aunts and uncles playing cards or LCR for dollar bills.  Dining room table loaded with enough food for a small country.  General madness ensues.

6:00PM – M starts giving me the eye and asking when I want to put the kids to bed.

6:25PM – M is cranky because I didn’t take the kids up to bed 25 minutes ago.

7:00PM – Kids are exhaused, bathed, and in bed.  Extended family is taking down dad’s tree, packing up leftovers, and putting tired kids into pajamas for the drive home.

8:00PM – Oh shit, are we seriously going to another party? Back to mom’s house for her Christmas Night party. [Too tired to take any more photos.] Same crowd as the morning, plus about 25 more.  Mobbed.  Another dinner.  We stay until the old Michael Jackson starts playing and all of the inebriated relatives start dancing.  Gotta go!

10:30PM – Crash into bed. M wonders aloud if we’re really going to keep doing this every year. I don’t bother to answer.  Fun. Exhausting. Family. Traditions. Can’t wait to go home.  [Will absolutely do it again next year.]

Merry Christmas

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   December 25th, 2008

Merry Christmas, blogosphere!  I hope everyone is having a lovely day, whether you celebrate the holiday or not.  We’re enjoying a brief break in the madness with the kiddos’ afternoon nap.  When they get up, it’ll be just in time for the party to re-start.  Tomorrow, we pack it all up, take boxes of goodies to the UPS store for shipping home, and fly back to Boston.  It’s been, on the whole, a really great trip.  But I’m more than ready to be home.

Many more photos to come, but here’s a quick peek at my dad’s house this morning before it was covered in torn wrapping paper and overrun with relatives.
