You know, I’m awfully glad I did this project publicly on the blog, and as a quilt-along. Even if nobody else is still sewing, I feel that little bit of extra pressure to see this all the way through. If I didn’t, I think I would have thrown up my hands and abandoned the project, because damn do I want to be done making these blocks. I feel like the guy in the old Dunkin Donuts ads, gloomily trudging into my sewing room, saying “time to make the triangles…”
OK, that’s being way over-dramatic. It’s not really all that bad, the blocks do come together so quickly. I just can’t believe I’m STILL making them.
This week, I made 16 more pairs to finish off my stack of blue. That makes 32 more blocks, for a total of 314. Lord, this quilt is going to be so much bigger than I thought.
I then grabbed my final two scrap boxes. One is purples and anything multicolored that isn’t easily categorized, and one is browns, blacks, and grays. I pulled out all of the fabrics big enough to cut a 5″ square and piled ‘em up. Oh, look! Only…
Oh, holy hell. That’s nearly 60 more fabrics. Who knew there even WERE so many damn fabrics, much less that I owned that many! That’s going to bring my ultimate total to well-over 400 blocks. This is going to be a twin-sized quilt. Holy crap, people.
Alright. Focus. I can do this. I can make these blocks. I’ve got some holiday projects to finish up this week, but I can fit in a few batches of triangles. Then I’ll be away for the week after that, but still almost a full week left in December when I get back.
New goal: FINISH THE BLOCKS BY THE END OF THE YEAR.
Oh yes. I have thrown down the gauntlet. I WILL DO IT!
Anyone else still out there? Can you tell I bit off a bigger project than I imagined? Ha!

This is going to be at least 2 different quilts. Or else I can imagine a VERY big quilt. I still work on mine, but now before Christmas it is difficult to take the time to finish it. But very soon….
Still here, cheering from the sidelines. I didn’t jump in to join you on this one, but am watching along and being impressed and looking forward to seeing how this masterpiece comes out. Go, go, go!
While I am not quilting along, I AM enjoying your posts. And your “oh holy hell” made me laugh out loud (sssshhh! I’m supposed to be working here!). This quilt is going to be gorgeous – I love how HSTs look. But I detest making them. All that trimming!
You can do it!!!
I am still very much here. In fact, the HSTs have splintered off into mini quilt projects (my daughter’s Brownie troop are making HST quilts to donate to Project Linus), and I find I’m inserting them into lots of different projects here and there. I’ve probably made close to 400 squares total since starting your QAL, but I think I only have about 200 piled up that are dedicated to this project only. I actually love making them. So satisfying. And so versatile. I can’t wait to show you all the different designs my little Girl Scouts made!
Best!

I’m still here. My pile of HST’s (probably around 250) is still sitting where I left it five weeks ago in my dining room turned sewing room. Right now I’m buried underneath the totally insane number of sewing projects I took on for Christmas gifts. Thus far I’ve made six totes for teacher gifts, sixteen placemats for various relatives and am just starting to quilt the full size quilt I am making for my mom. Oh and I also made two dog tutus… not sewing, but crafty. I don’t know if I’m going to want to sit at my sewing machine again until sometime in July after all this. How many sewing days left until Christmas?
I’m not part of the QAL, but love to read about these HST. I love that you are making them out of scrap fabric. How do youorganize your scraps and how big are the scraps that you save. I always want to save my scraps, but I never can quite figure out a good storage system or plans for using them. Any sewing/quilting organizing tips are very much appreciated!
Thanks Liz! I love your quilts!
