Capes

By Liz · July 5th, 2011

I’ve been meaning to make my kids some play capes for quite a while. I had this tutorial bookmarked, but I think the idea of deciding on an applique pattern (as well as getting the felt and actually DOING the applique) was apparently enough to hold me back.

Well, finally I decided to just go for it and abandon the applique altogether. I hunted through my stash to see what I had in big enough pieces, and pulled out a few choices. I particularly loved this July-appropriate red, white & blue firework print that I bought at Joann’s a few years ago.

Perhaps the next time I make capes, I’ll actually put the kids’ initials on one side. But since these didn’t even get started until 9:00pm on July 3, it was all about quick and dirty finishing.

One has blue on the reverse side, one has red. The whole thing, start-to-finish for two capes, was just over an hour.

I had hoped to get a picture of both kids together, but my son got sent to his room, instead, and my daughter only kept it on long enough for me to snap a quick shot. This was the best I was going to get, yesterday.

Ah well.

I love that material. I had several yards of it and am just about out. I made a pillow case style shirt for my daughter and was so glad it still fit this year, so festive, but not too hot for her to wear to the parade!

Super cute kids( and capes too!) I’ve made those same ones for my 2 little ones. They requested a lightning bolt for my son and a heart for my daughter. So they play lightning boy and love girl. So cute:-)
