Travel Handmade gets out of hand

By Liz · Comments (10) · September 30th, 2012

Honestly, two weeks ago, I did not have plans to make anything at all for Sewing Summit. But then all of my sewing friends on Twitter and Instagram started posting one great project after another, and suddenly I need to sew all of the things.  It’s like I’m on some kind of crafting bender. So, here’s what I’ve been up to since last week.

jewelry roll

There’s the jewelry roll, made using a great tutorial from Fiberosity. I used some much-beloved and hoarded Heather Ross fabrics (because I get to keep it for myself, haha), and it was the first time I’d ever done bias binding, which only makes me love striped bindings even more. I varied ever so slightly from the tutorial – I put some lightweight interfacing on the single-layered pockets because I worried about earrings poking through that gorgeous fabric, and I did the topstitching lines to create the pockets without the back fabric attached, because I didn’t want to see those sewing lines on the exterior.

I think I know what I’m making all of my female relatives for the holidays this year.

Up next, I saw this easy-peasy skirt tutorial from Whipstitch. I really do like skirts, and I liked the idea that this one was somewhat fitted. Unfortunately, my first attempt (at 4:00 in the morning because I had gone to bed too early and was wide awake in the middle of the night) was a little TOO fitted. As in, wouldn’t actually pull up over my butt. Oops. Too bad, I really liked that print. Anyone in maybe a size 10-12 range want a mostly-finished skirt? I’ll even hem it for you.

too-small skirt

Later in the afternoon, I made it again but enlarged the pattern by several inches. What can I say, I’m not a small girl. Anyways, this one fit perfectly and I love the way it looks. I’ll definitely wear it in Salt Lake.

Late last night, I decided I absolutely needed a circle zip earbud pouch. Like, NEEDED. As I said, crafting bender. It got a little crazy.

OK, I made one for my husband, too. Good thing each one only takes 10-15 minutes.

And then, this afternoon, I finished a big honking quilted tote bag to carry all of my projects and shopping spoils when I’m in Salt Lake City.  I started with a quilt block I had, lingering in a stack from a long-forgotten bee. I quilted it with batting but no backing fabric for the outer portion of the bag. It’s lined in a solid aqua, and even has a zippered pocket on the inside so I don’t lose my phone in the bottom of this cavernous bag.

Best of all, 100% of this stuff was fabric and materials I already had on hand. For the last month or so, I’ve been trying very hard not to buy any fabric. I know it’s going to be a free-for-all at the fabric shop hop in Utah, so I’m trying to save my money and my fabric-buying karma until then.

I leave for Sewing Summit in 10 days. I’d like to say I’m going to be all done with the crazy sewing projects. But who knows when I might find the need for another little zippered bag…

Speed Work

By Liz · Comments (3) · January 26th, 2012

After the almost-year-and-a-half that was Triangle Madness, I feel like I’m making up for it with speedy projects.

cutting for a plus quilt

Inspired by the Tangerine Tango challenge and some adorable bundles of Lizzy House’s newest line, Outfoxed, I decided to make an orange-and-plum quilt using Jeni’s Plus Quilt tutorial.  I cut the squares on Tuesday and the (not small!) quilt top was done by Sunday! Oh, man, that was super satisfying and fast! Now I just need to order a bit more fabric to make the back, and I may have another finished quilt on the books.

plus top done

And speaking of fast finishes, last night I got it in my head that I needed a new little zippered pouch for my credit cards. A regular wallet just feels too bulky, I like to be able to throw something small in my jacket pocket when I’m dashing into Target  with three kids in tow.  A quick look at Cara’s tutorial, and about 10 minutes later I had this cute little gray and orange number.

because you always need a new pouch

It’s not perfect, but for a quick grab out of the stash and a few minutes at the sewing machine, it’s perfectly cute and functional. Win!

Any quick projects going on in your world, friends?

Waves

By Liz · Comments (12) · November 1st, 2011

This package of goodies is now in the hands of the US Postal Service.

Neptune Overload

After the Sewing Summit, I found myself tempted to jump back into the world of social sewing. I haven’t done any Bees or Swaps since the beginning of this year, and it was a much-needed break. While they can be fun, they’re also a lot of work, and definitely involve the risk of being disappointed – which I have been, in the past. But I’m an extrovert by nature, so everything is better to me if there’s a social aspect involved. I wanted to keep the good energy of Sewing Summit going, so I organized a swap for people who had gone.

It’s small and quick, only about 30 people and less than a three week turnaround time.  People are making mini quilts and/or zippered pouches, since those were both big hits at the conference.  I already got mine, a super-cute flying geese mini from Jacey.

Post-Summit Swap, received!!

For my partner, I found a Neptune charm pack kicking around in my stash, and decided to have fun with hexagons, since that’s what I worked on for most of the conference. I sewed them together in a kind of random shape, and appliqued them right onto a base of Essex Linen in Natural. I echoed the shape of the applique in turquoise thread. I’m really happy with the texture of it, even if I could easily point out all of its imperfections.

The back is a print that I had left from the Neptune fat quarter stack I got several years ago. Binding is a Connecting Threads print from my stash, and marks the first time I have ever successfully done machine binding! I’m torn, because I still like the look of hand-finished binding better, but holy hell was that fast! Not to mention the extra strength of the machine stitching…

Back with label

And just when I thought I was done, I randomly decided to make a little zippered pouch from some of the leftovers. I used Cara’s tutorial, but made it patchwork instead of a solid piece of fabric. Turns out that just meant more seams to (not quite) line up. Oh well. I thought it was cute.

So, this whole mess of stuff is making its way West, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my secret partner likes it!
