Delayed

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   February 14th, 2009

I only have a brief moment to type, but the trip from hell continues.  We took Rebecca back to Urgent Care this morning, “just to check” before we flew home.  Yep, ear infection. Can’t go anywhere until the antibiotics kick in lest her ear explode on the flight. Charming.  I won’t lie, I burst into tears when they said it was infected.  I’m so done.

Anyways, off we go again, that’s all the time I’ve got on my mom’s computer.  Hopefully our flight at the crack of dawn on Tuesday will go as planned.

Sigh.

Out the window

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (9)·   February 10th, 2009

Hoo, boy.  This is turning out to be some kind of vacation, alright.

I wrote late last night on HDYDI that Daniel got a return trip to Urgent Care with daddy and grandma.  Breathing and coughing got worse, he couldn’t sleep (very unusual for him), and he spiked another fever.  Off he went, and came back around midnight with a diagnosis of a really nasty ear infection and a prescription for amoxycillin (10 long days).  The coughing and congestion remains “just” an upper respiratory virus, which sadly means just riding it out and spending some time in the bathroom with hot water running.

Late-night ear infection

So, how’s today going?  Heh.  You guys know what a schedule nut I am.  Daily routines like naps and meals seldom vary more than half an hour from day to day.  My kids are typically up around 7:30, breakfast at 8 or 8:30, activity, snack, lunch around noon, down for a nap between 12:30 and 1:00.  Up around 3 or 3:30, snack, play, dinner at 5:30. Bath starts at 6:45, lights out by 7:15.

Today, Daniel woke up crying and coughing at 6:30 (having not really gone to bed until about 1AM).  Didn’t take long to wake Rebecca up, who also gave us a few nice-sounding coughs and felt a little warm.  By 8:30, Daniel was down for his first nap. We did get them both out for some fresh air. Papi (grandpa) took Daniel in the stroller, I took Rebecca walking over to the pool (“wa-wa? wa-wa?”).  At 11:30, we put them both down.  God only knows how long they will or will not sleep.  Doctor recommended we lay off the milk since it just adds to the gunkiness in their throats, so it’s been juice and water and snacks all day long.   We’re all over the place.

[As a sweet side note, Rebecca is showing some very sweet empathy towards Daniel.  Every time she hears him cry, she calls out for him. "Day-yul? Day-yul?"  She even walked over and gave him a kiss, and brought him some juice.  So sweet.]

Enjoy the sunshine

Tonight is M’s flight home, and while I’ll miss him, it’s probably just as well.  Neither he nor I feel that great, but I couldn’t get on a plane right now even if we wanted to, what with the sorry state of Daniel’s right ear. So M might as well go home as scheduled and get some rest.  I’ll head over to my mom’s place this afternoon, where at least I’ll have a little more privacy (but no computer!  Hooray for the iPhone…).  The weather is getting warmer, so hopefully the kiddos will feel well enough tomorrow to enjoy being outside and maybe even get into the pool.

And I wonder why I felt ambivalent about this trip… maybe I knew what was coming!

A little antibiotics go a long way

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   April 21st, 2008

As I mentioned over on How Do You Do It?, today marks Daniel’s first ear infection. A double, as a matter of fact. Poor kid. I suspected something was up last night. Though Daniel sometimes needs to fuss it out a bit before he falls asleep, he usually figures it out pretty quickly. Last night, he was still crying nearly an hour after we put him down. Though it sounded like a very sleepy cry, I had the feeling something was wrong. At first, I thought it might be the tooth trying to come through. I went in and picked him up, and we rocked in the chair for a while. He was restless, but eventually fell asleep. I stayed rocking for a while before I put him down in the crib, but the quiet was not to last. Soon he was crying again, not going to sleep. Very unusual.  It turned into a very unsettled night, lots of rocking, lots of unhappy Daniel. I started to suspect an ear infection when he kept turning his head back and forth when rocking with me, and cried so hard when I tried to lie him down flat. Poor kiddo.

I thought he seemed better in the morning, but by about noon, he seemed warm.  Indeed, a fever of 101.2.  I gave him Tylenol, and decided it was time to call the doctor. Not that I thought it was a total emergency, but I do think that a fever over 100 in an infant is at least worth a phone call.  But, of course, today is a holiday in Massachusetts, so I got the on-call doc instead of my regular office.  He was none too pleased to hear from a rookie mom with a kid and a fever.  He grumpily told me to come in and he’d have a look at him.  I was almost glad to hear him pronounce both ears infected, so at least I wasn’t just a worrywart who dragged him into the office on a holiday.

Three pharmacies later, we finally went home with some amoxicillin (how is it that two pharmacies didn’t have this?), some infant Motrin, and some saline nasal spray.  One dose, and Daniel was practically a different baby.  So before bed, he got his second dose of antibiotics, a hit of Motrin, and off he went.  Asleep before he finished his bottle.  Whew.

Now we’ll see if Rebecca decides to follow suit.  I know that ear infections themselves aren’t contagious, but the little cold that Daniel probably had the last few days (only real symptom being a runny nose) might be… and she did seem a touch warm before bed tonight… Time will tell.
