How far we’ve fallen

By Goddess in Progress ·   June 7th, 2009

M and I have always been the kind of people who can carry on entire conversations in movie quotes.  Some of our favorite movies from early on in our relationship, like the Birdcage and the first two Austin Powers movies, we can repeat practically verbatim.  We can usually just spout out an innocuous-sounding phrase, but with the right intonation, we both instantly know where it came from.

Not shockingly, I have not seen a movie in the theater since before the kids were born (for the record, it was Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix and I was gargantuanly pregnant and just praying I wouldn’t go into labor before it was over).  I’ve seen a small handful on cable, but when it comes right down to it, I have seen pretty much zero recent movies.

But we haven’t lost our touch.  No, we can still repeat strange-sounding phrases to each other, and we immediately catch the reference, and respond with the next line or otherwise work the source material into conversation.  Witness: this afternoon.  We were playing outside with the kids.  M walked up to me, where I was sitting and watching them play.

M: “Honey, I’m trying to remember…. is it sausage casing day, or is it doily lacing day?”
Me: “Are you sure it isn’t nervous pacing day?  Or perhaps doggie chasing day?”
M: “Wait, I remember.  It’s racing day.”
Me: “Ah yes. Today’s the day we race.”

Sad, isn’t it?  But damn, it sure is catchy.

C’mon. How many of you instantly knew where it was from?

Okay, it took me a few minutes with my friend google, but I figured it out and if that’s what your quoting these days, then yes, you’ve fallen quite far. :) I won’t name names in case anyone else wants to guess, but my kids don’t watch that one, so I didn’t recognize it.

I (we) don’t watch that particular show, (although I do like it, but the kidlet doesn’t-yet) but I can quote you any line from the Wonderpets and Yo Gabba Gabba, which THANKFULLY, we don’t watch YGG anymore. Just this past week, I have been watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in 30 minute increments and let me tell you, it is not the same as going to the movies on a whim on any given night, like I did in my former life.

It is sad but I did know the reference. That is one of my fave episodes. The boys even have a dance they made up for Go Go Go.

NO MOVIES since the kids were born?!??!?! You must remedy that!! Seriously one of the best dates Jon and I had was in FARGO when his mom watched the boys and we saw Transformers. Freedom while the kids were awake! Then we went to his fave mexican restaurant in Fargo and I read the menu to learn you could substitute queso for red sauce on anything. So I got a burrito covered in queso and drank my weight in margaritas, then we stumbled home.

And we’re going to have the same date (except Transformers 2) when we go back to Fargo next month.

I didn’t recognize that one, but I could probably quote the entire Cars movie at this point.

I think we have seen maybe two movies in the theater since the kids were born. But, we do watch alot of movies off of Netflix after the kids go to bed. I have resigned myself to the fact that is going to be how I get my movie fix for a while.

I have no idea. Please tell?

I am terrible with movie quotes, but my sister and I have entire conversations based on song lyrics! Drives my husband nuts. Or at least it did until he figured out to just ignore us.

Luckily my kids are still to young to watch tv but I can sing every frigging song that their juperoo plays and so can the husband. You know it’s really bad when you have friends over and you catch yourself singing the songs while your 6 month old jumps up and down on your lap. =(

The best part of having quotes with your husband is that you will crush anyone that dares to go up against you in a game of taboo.

I hope you can manage to find someone to watch the kids so you can go see the next HP movie in the theater. My mom knows that she is already booked opening night. =D

I just love the visual of you two bandying about lines like that! R & D are blessed with some very fun parents. :)

I’ve seen a whopping 2 movies since the girls were born, whereas I used to go all the time. Now that netflix ships to my island, however, I am back in the saddle. Yee haw!!

I’ve never been able to quote movies and, being he grew up outside the US, my husband is clueless in that area as well. But I always appreciated your innate ability in that area. Glad you found someone equally astute. But I’m surprised you don’t watch more movies these days. Since having kids, our idea of a “date” is enjoying some appetizers, a frozen pizza, and a Netflix movie on Friday nights after the kiddos are asleep.

I can’t name where that came from! Darn! But, Johnny and I frequently do the same thing, but with TV shows instead. I also fall into the “haven’t seen many movies since baby” category. We tend to watch DVDs a lot more now, or, when we’re desperate, buy something On Demand from Time Warner (what a rip-off!). We do get out on date nights, but then we don’t feel like spending $20 (or more) on tickets, then sitting in the dark for two hours with obnoxious people around us … I guess it’s like, well, if we spent the money on a babysitter and are staying up past our usual bedtime, then we might as well be interacting! :)

My college roommate and I constantly did lines from “Ferris Bueller”. I love to stop and watch it whenever it’s on.

I knew it instantly … it’s my fav episode … I never get to actually see it … only hear it on the car dvd (greatest invention ever … we take a lot of driving trips). Can you get “We’re goin’ to Mars..” and “Boinga, boinga, boinga…” out of your head?

Bet you’re singing them now .. LOL
