Fx4 – Toddler Gymnastics

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (8)·   February 20th, 2009

It’s another Friday, and time for Carrie’s Friday Foto Finish Fiesta!

We’ve started an awesome new class at The Little Gym.  They have parent-child gymnastics up to age 3 (at age 3, they start doing independent kid classes).  And if you’ve got a little monkey on your hands like I do, toddler gymnastics is the way to go!

Water fountain

The Little Gym has all of the characteristics I like in a class (unlike my nemesis, Gymboree).  There’s structure and routine (songs, warmup, exploring, activities, bubbles, goodbye), but while the adults are strongly encouraged to model participation in each activity or song, it’s more than acceptable if the kid decides to wander off on the mats.  Age-appropriate, and twin-friendly.  Hooray!

Tapping sticks

There’s fine-motor activities like sticks and bells.  There’s tons of gross motor running around, swinging from the uneven bars, learning how to roll down an incline, and even walk on the balance beam.  My kids loved it.  Rebecca liked doing a log roll, and after one or two demonstrations, LOVED climbing up on the mat, leaning forward to grab the bar, and swinging on her own!  Then she’d let go, land on her feet, and repeat.  What a monkey.

Swinging by herself

Daniel loved it, too.  And was particularly receptive to help from our teacher, Miss Erika.

Help from Miss Erika

My kids are currently the oldest ones in the class, as the stated age range is 10-18 months.  We may switch to the next age group (19 mo – 2.5 yrs) in a couple of weeks.  There are good parts to being the oldest, but once they’re really comfortable on the equipment, it might be nice to be the youngest and have older kids to look up to.

Balance beam

The only down side is the cost.  It’s an expensive class, and they only give a 10% discount on the second child.  Plus, it’s about a 20-week semester, so that really adds up.  A few sessions in, though, and it feels like money well spent.  It’s clean, very accessible, teachers are enthusiastic and friendly, and they have a very generous make-up policy if you need to go on a different day.  Plus, if you’re unhappy, you can withdraw and get a refund for the remainder of the term.  I’ll take it!

Fx4 – Chili Night

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (10)·   January 30th, 2009

Playing along again with Carrie’s Friday Foto Finish Fiesta!  Head over there to see tons of links for other people playing along.

I would say I make turkey chili almost every week.  It’s easy, tasty, and pretty healthy.  And, as a side benefit, the kids really like it!  Rebecca, especially.  Unfortunately, it doesn’t stay on her spoon as well as she might like.  So she, um, takes matters into her own hands…

She’s so lady-like and delicate, I tell you.

Daniel was less into the chili, but beyond cute as always.

Baby Picture Sunday – Bundled Up

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   January 25th, 2009

I’m joining in today with the party over at Who Says 8 is Enough? for Baby Picture Sunday!  This week’s theme is “Bundled Up.”  No shortage of opportunities here in chilly, snowy New England.

The first time we put them in the complete set of coat, snowpants, hats, gloves, and boots…. they were not exactly thrilled. Actually, you would have thought there were hot pokers inside each item, stabbing them. Clearly, they felt like they couldn’t move with all that stuffing around them, and the boots just threw them off.

Hate being bundled up

That was during our trip to Chicago, and thankfully, they’ve gotten over their boots-and-snowpants phobia. In fact, sometimes they now bring them to me and request to put them on.  Last weekend, right before I left for DC, I was feeling particularly shut-in.  It had been really cold the previous few days, and though it was snowing somewhat heavily, it was finally not as arctic and the wind had died down.  We needed to get out of the house, and even though M thought I was bonkers, I bundled them up and went into the yard, with all 6-8 inches of snow.

Snow up to her knees

OK, so they couldn’t exactly walk since the snow was up to their knees.  But we sought refuge in the playhouse (I’m glad I never got around to putting it away in the garage for the winter!), and got a bit of fresh air out in the snow.

Inauguration Day

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (10)·   January 21st, 2009

I’m back from DC and can’t wait to tell all about my trip. I’ll get into the delight that is traveling by myself with only carry-on luggage later. For right now, let’s cut to the chase and tell my version of 1.20.09.  Here you have it, five hours of Inauguration Day in 25 photos.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

We were just going to join the masses on the Mall, but at the last minute, my brother’s friend scored us four tickets in the purple section, right up front, just behind the people who were seated. Hooray!

Purple tickets

We heard the line for the Metro was insane, so we took off on foot before sunrise.  Starting place: 23rd and N. Destination: Purple Gate at 1st and Constitution. About a three-mile walk.

Walking before sunrise

How excited were we to turn a corner and have the Washington Monument in view?! The streets were almost completely empty of vehicles, but there were plenty of people out walking at sunrise on a Tuesday morning.

Family and Washington Monument

Brother, dad, me, and the Washington Monument

The Girl Scout volunteers were welcoming everyone by singing and chanting.  A festive atmosphere.

Crowds were gathering on the Mall, and this is where we might have stayed… if we didn’t have our Purple tickets.

Gathering on the Mall

The next hour of walking was nothing but chaos. We needed to get to First and Constitution. Each person we met gave conflicting directions. Streets were blocked. Gates, security checkpoints. We went through and then came out of two different “secure” areas, only to find they were another wrong turn, another dead end. We inched closer to our destination as the minutes (and miles) ticked by.

Capitol in the distance

Finally, after winding in and out, away from the Mall, we got to about 3rd and D and found the line for people with Purple tickets. It was winding the 3 1/2 blocks around the corner from the Purple Gate… and into the 2nd Street tunnel.

Found the Purple line - 3rd St Tunnel

It just kept going. And going. We kept walking farther and farther into the tunnel, and the line kept going. Looking on the map, I believe that tunnel was about half a mile long. When we finally came out the other end and onto I-395, we walked another few hundred feet and found the end of the line.  All told, close to a mile from the gate.  It was 8:40, we had been walking for two hours, and the gates were to open at 9.

Way back in the Purple line

Our spot at the end of the line

It was chaos all around. People looking for the Silver and Blue gates. People just as lost as we had been. A plow truck got stuck on the exit (entrance?) ramp, à la Austin Powers. People trying to cut in line being given the stink-eye. While there was plenty of security in the city in general, I saw maybe two cops anywhere near our area, and no one at all policing the line.  And if we thought we were far back? Within half an hour there were probably another thousand people behind us.  All with tickets for the Purple section.

Stuck plow truck

People even later than us

Did I mention it was cold??

Standing in line in the cold

Still, though, people were in generally good spirits. We got back into the tunnel, where it was marginally warmer. We talked with the people next to us, our “line family,” and did what we could to “maintain the integrity of the line!” No budging!  We moved slowly forward. People started singing songs, and you had a big chunk of the line doing the Hokey Pokey, just for fun.  We stood in line for an hour, two hours, two and a half… but we were inching closer.

Dirty wall, happy day

After almost two and a half hours, the pace of the line suddenly picked up. People were cheering as we neared the tunnel exit, and we joked that it would be springtime when we finally got outside (no such luck).  I didn’t think the increased pace was such a good thing as the masses spilled out onto D Street.

Are we there yet?

Finally, daylight

We rounded the corner of First Street, with a bit more pushing and shoving than had been going on the previous two hours. And then, people started pushing back and walking the opposite direction.  Word trickled back: it was after 11. They had closed the gates. No more people were being allowed in. There were thousands of us, lucky ticket-holders all. In the street with nary a Jumbotron to be found and no time to make our way back onto the Mall.

Hooray, the Capitol!

Not a good sign.

Giving up

There was no time to hesitate. It was 11:15. If we didn’t find a TV, and fast, we’d have the hateful irony of being two blocks away and actually missing the entire thing.  Nearby hotels were closed to overnight guests, only. There was a line around the corner just to get into the Starbucks.  My sore, frozen feet and legs wanted to give out on me. Finally, around 5th and H, we found an Irish Pub that didn’t have a line out the door. We were the last few shoulders to squeeze in and see the TV as Joe Biden and Barack Obama walked out onto the stage at the Capitol.

Crammed into a pub to see Joe Biden

But it was noisy, and we couldn’t hear a thing. I could barely see the TV over taller heads than mine. We were outside of the locked-down area near the Mall, and my sister-in-law had the quick thinking and good luck to hail a taxi on the otherwise nearly deserted streets.  We listened to the Invocation on the taxi radio and booked it across to our condo at 23rd and N. Rick Warren was still talking when we threw cash at the driver and bolted for the front door of the condo building… the elevator… the third floor.  My brother all but shoved me aside when I couldn’t find the power button on the unfamiliar TV.  It was 11:50.

So, we made it to DC. We walked for nearly five hours. And we saw the Inauguration. On TV.

Our view of the Inauguration

The final watching place

It wasn’t for another half hour or 45 minutes that I started crying. I was excited for the day, I was moved by the moment and the speech and the quartet.  And I was exhausted. And mad that we had gotten the tickets at all. Mad that I hadn’t stayed back at the Washington Monument four hours earlier. And I wondered why I had left my kids at home, just to watch it on MSNBC in a one-bedroom condo.

More on the beginning and end of the trip later. For now, I’m still sore from all the walking and the kids aren’t taking the nice afternoon nap I hoped they would.  No rest for the weary.

Friday Foto Finish Fiesta – Crazy Cold

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (17)·   January 16th, 2009

Alright, for the first time, I’m finally jumping on Candid Carrie’s awesome bandwagon for the Friday Foto Finish Fiesta!

This morning’s theme in my house is Crazy Cold.  Partially because it is, in fact, crazy-ass (wicked) cold outside right now. Negative six.  And I still need to pack the kids in the car and go shopping because I have nothing to wear to some Inauguration events this weekend.  Business casual and mommy casual, it would seem, do not really overlap.

But the other reason is that it appears the Cold has made my kids extra Crazy.  This morning, they not only requested to put on their hats, but also their boots!  It was quite a sight.

Makes My Monday – My little superheroes

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   January 12th, 2009

Thanks to Cheryl at Twinfatution for the always-fun Makes My Monday!

Today the kids wore their adorable new “super hero” shirts, a present from my sister-in-law.  In case you were wondering what some of their powers were, they’ll happily demonstrate…

Makes My Monday – Rice Box

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   January 5th, 2009

Joining in with Cheryl’ s Makes My Monday!  This morning, the kiddos requested some time with the rice box – an indoor “toy” I made several months ago that seems to be enjoying a resurgence in interest.  Wrote about it for HDYDI today, too.  Multi-purpose!  Entertains the kids, and makes for TWO blog posts!  Yeah!

Playing with the rice box

I actually have not been neglecting my blog all weekend… it’s just that the things I’m doing haven’t been visible.  Going through old posts, updating links (especially the ones that reference my own archives – half of them still pointed to blogspot, and the rest to the old WordPress site…), getting all the photos on Flickr.  Tedious and boring, yet strangely satisfying.

Resemblance

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (1)·   January 1st, 2009

Nearly everyone who sees my son immediately remarks how he looks like his dad.  I don’t see it as much, but I believe that most people do.  My daughter, on the other hand… she’s a mystery.  If she didn’t look so much like her ultrasound photos, I might wonder if they switched her with someone else’s kid.  My mom sometimes thinks she looks like M’s sister, and M decided the other day that she bears some resemblance to his mom.  Some people try to be nice and suggest she looks like me, but I’m not so sure.  I don’t think it’s hard to believe we’re related, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say she bears any kind of striking resemblance to her mother.  See for yourself, since I was at my dad’s house and could scan old pictures.  Here’s one of me as a baby, I’m going to guess somewhere around 8-10 months old:

Rebecca, about 9 months old:

I just don’t know.  I mean, yeah, we don’t look completely un-alike.  But no spitting image here.

On the other hand, it would appear that I do bear a striking resemblance to… myself.  I have Daniel to vouch for the fact that I look fundamentally the same as I did nearly two decades ago.  My proof? There’s a big portrait in my dad’s living room of me, my brother, and my dad.  I’m going to place it somewhere around 1992, what with my unfortunate combination of bangs, braces, and tight-rolled blue pants with white socks and blue loafers.  (Pre-flannel shirts and birkenstocks.)  Well, Daniel took one look at that picture and declared: “Mah-mee!”

Witness, 1992 in all of my eighth-grade glory (my apologies, and not just for the pants, it’s a photo of a photo in a dark room):

Versus 2008, a little older and wider, but basically the same:

Some things pretty much never change.  My looks, for the most part, among them.  I’ve gained and lost weight, grown and cut my hair, and certainly gotten older.  But while some people seem to continually look different, I’m pretty much always recognizable.

One more snowfall

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (1)·   December 31st, 2008

We had a snowy last day of 2008 here in Massachusetts.  M ended up working from home due to an urgent client call and the accelerating snowfall.  To keep the kids out of his hair while he was on a conference call, I took them outside to play in the snow.  Thankfully, I managed to time it before it got windy and started coming down too hard.  They weren’t too keen on the boots, but eventually realized they could walk in them just fine. And they won’t let a little thing like snow and cold get in the way of backyard fun.

2008 in Pictures

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   December 31st, 2008

I am blatantly stealing this idea from Little Bites of Heaven, who in turn borrowed it from Be Different… Act Normal.  Incredible how much difference a year makes.  It was incredibly hard to narrow it down to 12 pictures.  In fact, the best I could do was 60+, and even that was hard.  But if you want to see a bit more of 2008 in our world, I put together a Flickr photoset for the occasion (see left sidebar).  Anyways, without further ado, a brief look back at the year that was, with links to each month’s archives…
