IKEA!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (0)·   May 3rd, 2008

I was psyched when they finally brought Ikea to Massachusetts. When I first moved to Boston, the nearest one was in New Jersey. Doh! I ended up going to the one near Chicago when I was home that summer, because I was going to drive my car the 1,000 miles on I-90 back to Boston. A year or so ago, when I was largely past the age of assembly-required furniture, they finally opened one out here. It’s still far from me, a good 45-60 minutes on the opposite side of the city. We took a trip there when I was pregnant and we were looking for cribs, but we didn’t buy anything, and I remember being starving and exhausted from all the walking. But still, just because you don’t want to assemble your own couch, doesn’t mean Ikea is dead to you. There’s always something good to be had.

As the kids are becoming mobile, it’s time for yet another reimagining of our space. Not only is there plenty of child-proofing to be done, but maybe we don’t need to spend every waking moment in our living room. In fact, we have a very sunny den off of our living room. Well, in truth, it didn’t used to be so sunny. When we bought the house, it was dark and dingy and cold. Filthy purple-ish carpet, cheap faux wood paneling on the walls, foam tiles on the ceiling attempting to mask old water damage. (photo from before we bought it – those are not our nasty curtains and recliners!) It’s a tricky shape, about 8′ wide by 16′ long, with fully five windows and a door. Last spring, we had it gutted. Put in insulation (there was none), a wood floor (there was linoleum under the carpet), new walls and ceiling, and even overhead lighting (oh, the luxury!). It is bright and sunny, and possibly our favorite room in the house. Hard to take a picture of a small, long room… but you get the idea.

Anyways, it remained our computer room. Mine on one end, M’s on the other. I even got a big table instead of a desk, so it could hold my sewing machine. Ah, back when I used to sew! When the kiddos arrived, the Pack & Play joined us. It’s a convenient place to have a changing station and all of that. But we knew it was a short-term arrangement. This room’s destiny is to be a playroom.

Neither M nor I want to completely give up on it as a computer room. We spend a lot of time on our computers (blogs and photos for me, World of Warcraft for him), and we like having them in this space. Plus, there isn’t really anywhere else we’d put them. We decided the new arrangement would be this: both computers on one side of the room, gated off, and the rest of the room (more like 2/3) will be set up for the kids.

This rambling explanation is how it came to be that, while taking the kids for a walk before their morning nap, my mom and I decided to make an impromptu visit to Ikea. We dashed back into the house, threw together a bag of necessary baby stuff, measured the room, and put the kids in the car. As hoped, they both took a little nap in the car, enough to do the trick. We arrived just as the store opened, and wove our way around to the work space area. As soon as we laid eyes on this one, we knew it was what I had come for. A nice man wrote up our order for us, and our main mission was mostly accomplished.

[As yet another an aside, I find Ikea incredibly overwhelming. I love everything in there, I love the little rooms they have set up. I want it all. But it's also exhausting to walk around, and there are so many choices, I often end up leaving with nothing at all. And then, two days later, realize what I really needed and should have gotten. It's one of those stores that I have to go with a clear and defined purpose and list. Otherwise my head starts to spin.]

Anyways, we purchased our desk, waited forever for the furniture pickup folks to get all of the pieces together. The kids were really great the whole time, and of course were a total magnet for people to come look at them, make baby talk, and the usual twin comments. When we finally got our myriad boxes of components, and got creative with the seat layout in my minivan, we headed home.

There is much reorganizing, purging, and childproofing yet to be done before the boxes in my basement become our lovely new desk, and the den becomes the playroom it was always meant to be. And I can already see that I’ll be returning to Ikea in a few months (if not sooner) to pick up one of those adorable kid-sized tables and some other fun things. But still, the transformation continues…

The BOB saga

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   April 17th, 2008

Ever since we retired the trusty Snap n Go a few weeks ago, I have had some serious stroller envy. I have come to the realization that, much like shoes and purses, different situations call for different wheels. My Aria Twin is nice for everyday, since it’s very lightweight and just kind of easy to use. But the slightest bump in the road, bit of sand leftover from the snow, minor potholes from our long winter, or even a brick-paved sidewalk… and it gets tripped up, big time. Not a smooth ride for the kids, not an easy push for me. I have to wrestle it. And so I’ve been thinking about getting some kind of jogger/all-terrain stroller.

I will be the first to admit that I am not a jogger. It just doesn’t go well for me. Regardless, now that the weather is cooperating, we all need to get out of the house. I need the exercise (badly), and all three of us (plus the dog) need the fresh air. But I don’t want to have to fight with my stroller the whole way. The trouble with these fancy-schmancy strollers is that they come with a fancy-schmancy price tag attached. And though I know it’ll get a couple of years worth of use, and will then likely sell well at the twin sale or on Craigslist, I have a hard time justifying paying full price. Determined to find a deal, as well as the “right” stroller, I started doing research.

I talked to people about what strollers they had and liked. I emailed my moms of twins club for suggestions. I read reviews. I searched “double stroller” on Craigslist nearly every day, and checked returnsforsale.com to see if anything good popped up. Though there were a number of positive ideas, it sounded like the one to get is the BOB Revolution Duallie. I went to a nearby store and tried it out, kicking the tires and whatnot. Yep, that’s the one. And yet I still couldn’t make myself pay $529. But every single store I looked at, whether brick & mortar or online, sold it for the same price. No discounts, no sales. Nothing on Craigslist except for several “wanted” ads for said stroller.

And then, my blogging buddy Carrie sent me an email. Huzzah! Babycenter.com is having a two-week only 10% off sale on all BOB gear! And free shipping! This was the kick in the pants I needed. I immediately went online and placed my order. Confirmed! It was meant to be! Or, not. Two hours later, I got an email that my order was canceled (not delayed, canceled) because the stroller was out of stock. I smell a rat. I’m pretty sure Babycenter promoted this sale, sold a couple of items, and then were out of stock. But what a nice way to get people shopping on your website! I’m further convinced of this because they actually canceled my order instead of just telling me it would take a while until my stroller arrived. No, I would have to come back and buy it later, at full price. Jerks. (Haha, now I’ve told the internet how much you suck… I hope all three of my readers vow to never purchase from you again.)

Thwarted in my attempts to get 10% off, I have now been bitten by the bug, and it’s supposed to be 70 degrees here for the next few days. Screw it, I say. I’m just going to go to the nearby REI and buy the damn thing at full price. M was notified of a bonus and a raise yesterday, so we were feeling a little more flush… Just go for it. I call my mom in the morning and we discuss my plans to just go ahead and buy the stroller at full price. Ever resourceful, my mom goes online and finds a coupon for 15% off one item at REI! As a matter of fact, anyone can get this coupon, all you have to do is sign up for their email mailing list! I called to make sure it was accepted in-store, that the stroller was not somehow excluded, and that I could come and get it today. Good thing I called, because I found out the store near my house did not, in fact, have any strollers in stock.

And so, when my babysitter arrived this afternoon, I drove half an hour and on two different highways to get to the store, so I could get my damn stroller for 15% off.

And it was SO worth it.

Baby Jail

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   April 8th, 2008

We’re definitely ready for some rearranged space in our house. Both kids are sitting very steadily, and Rebecca is seemingly moments away from real crawling. She’s currently doing the downward-dog, step forward with feet, flop forward with arms and chest move like my friend Bev described with her son, Jack. It’s not graceful, but it is resulting in slow forward motion.

And yet, I have been totally procrastinating on the babyproofing front. I think I’m in denial. I will shortly need to work on some true rethinking of our space, like Tracey did for her boys. In the meantime, though, we made a small organizational (and safety) step forward.

We finally took the bassinet attachment off of our Pack & Play yesterday. We really use the PnP for the changing station, as the kids long since outgrew the bassinet, and only nap in their cribs, anyways. Instead, the shallow basket turned into a catch-all for sweaters, hats, and outgrown baby clothes. A mess.

DSC_0095 So, now, it’s really a “playyard!” It helps that it’s in our den, the room where M and I have our desks and computers. This way, the kiddos can safely play while we check email (or, I don’t know, write a blog entry?). Not only does this help with the newfound screams of protest when we walk more than 10 feet away from them, but we’ve even turned it into a new game. The top rail blocks my face from view, so I totally play the “Where’s Daniel?” And he bends down and peeks at me underneath the rail. So cute, and he gets a big kick out of it.

It’s obviously not a huge amount of space for nearly-mobile babies, but it’s nice to have another “spot” for them to hang out and play, while still interacting with me a bit. M lovingly calls it “Baby State Penitentiary.” And they seem to dig it, so far…

Speed-shopper

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (2)·   April 5th, 2008

Today was my twin club’s semi-annual tag sale. Compared to others in the area, it’s regarded as one of the best, though I’ve never been to any other. It’s in a high school cafeteria, reasonably well-organized in the space (tables of clothes here, large equipment over there, etc). When I went last fall, it was madness. I showed up maybe 10:30 in the morning with my mom, and the place was mobbed. And the stuff… the sheer volume of stuff was overwhelming.

I’m not much of a tag sale shopper. I lose my patience. With two kids, I really should be more of a bargain-hunter than I am, but I’m not good at it. When I think about it, I’m not really much of a “shopper” at all. When I shop, I go because I have something in particular that I’m looking for. So having to sift through racks and piles at tag sales and places like TJ Maxx is not my cup of tea.

But, I decided to go to the sale, and I went with a list. I was mainly looking for two things: a jogging stroller with swiveling front wheel(s), and some “older” toys for the kids. Doors opened for members at 9:30 (thought it was 9, I was wrong). I got up with the kids (early again, ugh), and put them down for a nap just a little earlier than normal at 8:15. Told M I was leaving, and out I went. I was in line 45 minutes before doors opened, and was still 6th or 7th in line! By 9:15, the line was out the door. I was glad I had mistakenly remembered the start time, because I wanted to just get in and get out, no waiting.

At 9:30, I paid my $1 admission fee, and went straight to the equipment area. There was a somewhat dirty double jogger there, but fixed front wheel. No go. Oh well! The nice part about the fact that I was shopping for things that I didn’t urgently “need” is that I could be picky about what I was going to take. Went over to the toy area, and spotted a bag full of extra-large lego-type blocks (no choking hazard), and one of those toys with the winding wires that you can move the beads around. Great! I had been there less than five minutes. Since it wasn’t full yet, I took a quick stroll over to the tables of clothing (organized by size and gender, even the infant boys’ table was piled a good 3-4 feet high). Grabbed two pairs of pants for Daniel, which I had been meaning to buy anyways. On my way back to the register, found a never-used inflatable bathtub, which I had also been looking for. Took a quick loop around the room, didn’t see anything else that inspired, and I was out. Paid my $15.50 for two toys, a tub, and two pairs of pants, and I left the building. It was 9:40am.

I got back home and it wasn’t even 10am yet. Daniel was still asleep in his crib. I peeked into our bedroom and M was asleep with Rebecca, who must have done her standard 45-minutes-and-awake routine, which M clearly was not having. She almost always falls back asleep with a little Daddy cuddling.

For those keeping score, it’s not quite 10:15 in the morning. I have gotten up with the kids, fed them bottles, done a load and a half of laundry, fed them solids, changed diapers (twice), changed clothes, put them down for a nap, got myself dressed, went out and got coffee, got in line at the sale, purchased toys and clothes, came back home. And in an hour, it will be time to leave for our Sign & Sing class. Anyone else think I’m going to need a nap around 2pm?

Goodbye, Graco

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (1)·   March 31st, 2008

IMG_0247 Another day, another milestone in my house! Saturday, after returning home from our new Sign & Sing class, I removed our trusty Graco SnugRide carseat bases from the minivan. I had been leaving the seats themselves in the car for the last week or so. It has just become too heavy and cumbersome to lug them in and out of the house with the babies in them. While the kids aren’t particularly close to the stated size limits (22lbs and/or 29in), it just felt like time to be done with them. Maybe if I had just one kid I’d hold onto it longer… but not with two.

[As an aside, I can't imagine purposefully getting one of the seats with even higher size limits... not only are the seats, themselves, even heavier, but lugging a 30-lb baby around in a carrier?! Good lord!]

This also, of course, means saying a fond farewell to our Double Snap N Go. Ah, the Snap N Go. My constant companion. You just can’t beat having a carseat stroller frame. It literally was used almost every day. It has gotten to the point, though, that I have sort of a love-hate relationship with it. Convenient and essential though it was, it also drives like a bus and can be kind of awkward and clunky.

IMG_0256 Taking the place of the old equipment are two Britax Marathons (purchased on sale from Amazon.com last month, at a better price than Babies R Us, even with the twin discount), which are enormous but should last us a good 3+ years. For the stroller, we’ve been using our Peg-Pérego Aria Twin off and on all along, but now it’s the primary go-to set of wheels. The best part about it is that it’s quite lightweight. The downside, as is the case with many standard strollers, is that it can’t handle much more than flat, dry, unobstructed pavement. I’m not much of an outdoorsy-type, but I do like to take nice walks and could see the benefit of a more terrain-friendly stroller. So, I’m stalking Craigslist to see if I can find something (the Mountain Buggy Urban Double, if I’m lucky) for a more reasonable price than the $650+ for a new one.

Daniel & Rebecca are outgrowing (physically and developmentally) a bunch of things recently. The swing hasn’t been used in nearly two months, bouncy seats even longer. And today, we wave goodbye to their main mode of transport for the last eight months. In truth, we’ll use them once more when we fly to Florida in two weeks, but that’s the last of it. I have an email partially composed, ready to send to my MOT club listserv, to unload all of this baby gear on someone else. It has been good to us, and it’s all still in darn good condition, but I’m ready to see it go. There’s plenty of other stuff taking up space in our house right now.

If I sit and think about it, it’s a little bit bittersweet to think that my babies aren’t such little babies anymore. I think about how tiny they used to be in those carseats they’re now outgrowing. I think about how the Snap N Go was a lifesaver, that I wouldn’t have been able to leave the house without it in those early weeks and months. But then I remember what those first weeks and months were like. And I quickly snap out of it and remember how much happier I am now, with fun and nearly-mobile eight-month-olds, than in the hazy, hellish days of eight-week-olds. Yeah… see you later, newborn stuff!

What a rebel

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   March 16th, 2008

File under “things it never occurred to me to check.”

Apparently the covers of my high chairs are not machine washable. Seriously? Have these people ever met babies? Babies who love pureed sweet potatoes? Bright-fricking-orange sweet potatoes? The label reads thusly: “Clean pad with warm water and soap for light stains. For a complete wash, dry clean only.” Um, what? A dry-clean-only high chair cover? I don’t even buy dry-clean-only sweaters. And with these poor high chairs, there is no such thing as a “light stain.” Only one month of use and they are crusted with oatmeal, banana, sweet potato, and the frequently rejected green beans. I decided that, if they were going to survive in my house, they would have to suck it up and go for a ride in the washing machine. Screw manufacturer’s instructions. Mwa haha!

OK, you know what? No drama. Threw them in the wash (on the gentle cycle, just in case), and they came out just fine. I’m even letting them hang dry (which the label also suggests, despite its dry cleaning recommendation – did the psychic high chair predict I would disobey a direct order?). Now I know, high chair covers can handle a spin in the wash. Good thing, because I really didn’t want to go and buy new high chairs. And I couldn’t have my kids sitting in months-old dried applesauce. Eew.

iLove my new toy

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (2)·   November 17th, 2007

M and I haven’t been real big on presents since we got married. Joint checking accounts (and me paying all the bills) takes something out of the magic. Usually we’re happy enough to mark a birthday or anniversary with a nice dinner out. We even managed to do just that last week for my birthday.

In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about getting a new cell phone. There isn’t anything particularly wrong with my old one, but something about having kids has made me actually want a camera phone. That which I intentionally avoided the last time I got a new phone.

Well, M decided that I should get myself a birthday/Hannukah/Christmas present. And today I brought home my spanking new iPhone. Oooh. Honestly, it’s at least as sexy as it looks on TV. It’s beyond cool.

As he was convincing me to get it last night, I started to say things like “you know, I have been wanting a camera phone,” or “oh, I could put music the kids like on it so I could have it in the car!” To which he responded, “seriously, there are starving children in Africa. Don’t try to justify it, just get it.”

And so I did.

So, today’s photo comes courtesy of my shiny new toy. I give you: Baby Girl in Tub (yes, M kept a hand on her while I took the picture).

Three cheers for Craigslist

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   November 4th, 2007

A week or two ago, Daniel in particular decided he really likes being propped into a sitting position. On your lap, on the couch, on the floor, whatever. It’s his new preferred way to be.

Naturally, it coincided with the stupidest recall ever.

All I wanted was a damn Bumbo chair. But since this ridiculous recall was in effect, which amounted to getting a bigger sticker to restate the warning that was already printed on the damn thing, all of the stores had pulled it from the shelves. Seriously, people. Do we really need to sue the company because you were foolish enough to put your nine-month-old in the Bumbo, unattended, on the kitchen island?? Honestly. I had even scoped out where to get it the cheapest. My maternity center was the most expensive, at $45 even after my 10% discount. Target was better at $38, but BJ’s beat them all at $34. Fat lot of good that does me when they aren’t carrying it when I want it.

Enter Craigslist. It was mine for $25 in about 12 hours. I love the internet.

So, for today’s pictures, the twins have a go in their brand new purple Bumbo. Life is good.

All I need are some soccer balls

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (2)·   July 21st, 2007

Another milestone in my adult life has been reached.

My Jeep was coming up on 8 years old (only 56,000 miles, thank you!), and I had long known the time was approaching for a trade-in. For the last couple of years, I couldn’t take it in for repairs without the mechanic finding three other broken things and it costing at least $1000. I like driving an SUV. I particularly like having the space to haul things, and I really like not having to worry too much when it snows in New England. My husband’s Jetta might be confined to the driveway for a week, but not me and the Jeep.

But its time was nearing, so I long thought I might go for a small SUV, like a Subaru Forester or Rav-4 or something. Still hearty, still plenty of space, still the ability to get places in the snow. But a little less of a behemoth, both in physical size and outrageous gas mileage. Sure, I knew we were going to try to get pregnant soon, but there’s no reason you can’t put a carseat in a Forester. The minivan, I laughed, could wait until the second child.

Heh.

Once we knew the twins were on their way, I knew the minivan was going to be the way to go. I resisted the idea a bit. Somehow the idea of being 28 years old and driving a minivan was just too strange. My mom drives a minivan, not me. But the draw of the dual power sliding doors was too great. So, on Friday, I said goodbye to my Jeep Grand Cherokee and hello to my Toyota Sienna.

Though I keep wondering what stranger has parked in my driveway, I cannot deny that it’s a great car. It drives really well, has an obscene amount of space (and I thought my Jeep was huge), and still has better gas mileage than I used to. And though I hadn’t intended to get all of the options, that’s pretty much what they have on the lot at the end of the model year. My dad decided the rear-seat DVD system was the best thing ever when we put on the Big Lebowski on the way to dinner Friday night.

It still smells like new car, and has not yet been pimped a-la Zima. The carseat bases are installed, and the dog is amazed at how much there is to sniff back there. I really do like it, even if it feels surreal. Now I just need some soccer balls in the back, and I’ll really be on my way.

Oh, and I swear it’s a bad angle and I really do look pregnant. Not just hugely fat.

Weekend in Chicago, part 1: Stuff

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (0)·   May 2nd, 2007

I’ve been attempting to write about my trip for the last three days, and have scrapped the entry each time. It just kept getting too long and disorganized. So I’ve decided to split it up into three entries to be a little easier to sift through. (I make it sound like it was such a monumental weekend… really it was just a nice visit, so don’t get your hopes up for too much profound insight.)

Part 1 is dedicated to… Stuff.

The shower was just lovely, with many sides of my blended family represented. It was family-only, which made it a more manageable size, and everyone got along great. It was a picture-perfect Sunday in Chicago. Unseasonably warm at 80 degrees and sunny, so we spent most of the time outside.

Baby shower April 07 The gift-opening ritual at a shower always seems a little awkward to me. I really did appreciate every single gift, from the diaper genie to every adorable onesie. But no matter how sincere my gratitude, I always feel a little fake making a scene each time I unwrap something. And I know it’s not the most fun to sit through all of the ooh-ing and ahh-ing, so I try to keep things moving along while not rushing. It’s a balancing act.

Despite my mom’s attempts to warn people of the difficulties of transporting things back to Boston, the sheer volume of stuff at the end of the day was daunting. A few people had shipped large items, like carseats and a high chair, directly from the registry to Boston. But I still got a diaper genie, bathtub, and pack & play presented in person. I had brought an extra duffle bag, and by a miracle of packing and creative carry-ons, I managed to get nearly everything home on the plane, save for the baby bathtub. However, it had a gift reciept on it, so my mom (genius!) decided to return it for me and send me the merchandise credit so I can then buy it for myself back home.

When I got it all home (thank goodness for the Smarte Cartes at the airport, even if they’ve gone up to $3), I was dying to unpack it all and show my husband the adorable onesies, hats, blankets, and other assorted very small items. And then it hit me. I couldn’t unpack. There’s nowhere to put it all.

It suddenly hit us how much there is to do, and how little time there really is. I mean, they could easily be here in three months, give or take a couple of weeks! And here we are, no cribs, no dressers… nothing. I finally came up with a solid idea for what we’ll do with our two baby rooms (one for sleeping, one for feeding/changing/dressing), but now we have to implement it. There is much cleaning, purging, rearranging, painting… and purchasing to be done. Time to get a move on.

Oh, and time to write thank you notes. Thank you, everyone!!
