Thursday Theater – Courtesy of Sandra Boynton

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   June 25th, 2009

Welcome, yet again, to Thursday Theater! This is my weekly self-challenge to take and edit more video (the rest of you are welcome to join in the fun).

This week is just the Becca Bean (yes, that’s her new nickname, courtesy of my mom. I think it’s just a gateway into calling her Becca full-time…). My little girl has always seemed to need less sleep than her brother, so I frequently hear her wake up from nap and run up to grab her before she wakes her brother. Which she does on purpose. By shouting “Daniel! Daniel! [Where] Are You, Daniel? Wake up!” It’s funny, right up to the point where he wakes up much less well-rested than she is.

Thankfully, she’s pretty mellow when she’s up on her own. I was sitting at my computer while she was entertaining herself, when she brought me an old favorite among the big stack of books: Sandra Boynton’s Moo, Baa, La La La. This was one of the first books that they would “play along” with the animal sounds, and Rebecca’s performance the other day was no slouch.

Thursday Theater – Ham bones

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   June 18th, 2009

Sometimes I can scarcely believe it’s already Thursday again. Weird how an hour can take forever, but then a week is suddenly more than halfway gone. Anyways, here we are again, time for more video! If you’re playing along, too, share in the comments.

This was taken at one of our go-to destinations, Whole Foods. We get a few grocery items, but we also usually go around snack time. So we grab something tasty (chocolate milk is our usual special treat, with some fruit or crackers or something) and camp out in a booth for a little while. As I was without my trusty camera (the new one arrived late Wednesday, first photos coming soon), I stashed my video camera in my purse.

This is the result of me flipping the preview screen over so the kids could see themselves. I love the increasing self-awareness that comes with this age. Not only do they recognize themselves and each other and have the words for each other’s names (“Picture [of] Daniel [and] Becca! Daniel Becca!”), but they’re actually starting to goof off for the benefit of the camera. I love it!
(And, is it me, or does Ms. Becca Bean look a little bit insane in this one? Ah well. The camera doesn’t lie…)

Thursday Theater – Cheap entertainment

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (10)·   June 11th, 2009

For those who didn’t know the reference from Sunday’s post, the quote was from a Backyardigans Episode, Race Around the World. M and I have had it stuck in our heads ALL. WEEK. LONG.

At any rate, here we are for another installment of Thursday Theater!  Mr. Linky is not super cooperative these days, so if you’re joining the party, just say so in the comments.

I took this video over the weekend.  Hat tip to my friend Jane for the idea, when she busted out some big buckets and a hose the last time we had a playdate at her house.  It seemed to be a hit, so I found two 5-gallon buckets in the garage and the sand toys my in-laws got to go with the sandbox (containers pilfered from the recycling bin work just as well).  Obviously, it’s an activity for a warm day, and you simply have to accept the fact that they’re going to be soaked within minutes.

We all know that toddlers have notoriously short attention spans.  For Rebecca, apparently, one major exception is this type of water activity.  It was unreal how long she continued to play with two big buckets and a couple of smaller pouring implements.

Thursday Theater – Under the hammock

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (4)·   June 4th, 2009

I’ll tell you, I almost didn’t do Thursday Theater at all today.  Between the weekend away and the insanity that followed, I haven’t taken any new video, nor have I had time to put anything together.  But, hey, what the heck…. the in-laws are off at graduation today and I have a bit of quiet time while the kids are napping.  Plus, I’m finding the video editing is getting a lot quicker.  Hooray for practice!

Anyways, this is just a little extra footage from the same day as last week’s video.  Kiddos were spontaneously playing under the hammock. Rebecca was quite clear on whose wheel was whose, the dog tried to retrieve her toy from on top of the hammock, and then… best of all… daddy came home.  Enjoy!

Thursday Theater – Shoe Helpers

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (10)·   May 28th, 2009

Hiya!  It’s Thursday, must be video time!  Mr. Linky has been having some issues, so if you’re joining in the fun and posting your own video today, let us know in the comments.

I took this (and a lot of other footage, actually) last Friday when it was warm and gorgeous and we spent the whole afternoon in the backyard. (Unlike today, which is fricking cold and rainy. Stupid New England.)  I was lounging in the hammock, and had taken my shoes off.  As we all know, toddlers can have a very clear sense of order and the way things should be.  They did not like that I had taken my shoes off.  So, I asked them to help me put them back on.  Easier said than done, apparently…

Thursday Theater – Daniel’s Dialect

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   May 21st, 2009

It’s a free-for-all here at Thursday Theater.  No theme, no challenge. Just video.  If you’re so inclined, add yourself to Mr. Linky!

For today, I captured a tiny smidgen of Daniel’s non-stop chattering.  He’s very verbal, talks non-stop.  He’s stringing together longer combinations of words, and not just a constant repeat of “bus! bus! bus! big bus!”  Though he does that, too.  Until you repeat it back to him.

I find listening to talkative toddlers reminds me of watching movies like Trainspotting or The Full Monty, where the actors have a really heavy accent.  The first few minutes of the movie, especially if you haven’t seen it in a while, and you’re not entirely sure they’re actually speaking English.  But once you get used to it and have some context, you can understand it, no problem.  Toddlers are like that.  If you aren’t around them very often, or they’re saying something without obvious context, then it feels like you’re in French class and didn’t study hard enough. The word sounds vaguely familiar, but you have no fricking clue what it is.  But once you’re in the groove, they’re actually saying quite a lot of things for you to understand.

Anyways, here’s a little bit of Mr. D.

Thursday Theater – 30-second Rule

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (8)·   May 14th, 2009

Welcome to Thursday Theater! Please, add your link to Mr. Linky (below) and play along! Last week I left you with a short-and-sweet challenge: make your clip 30 seconds or less.

Of course, it was supposed to be an editing challenge, and I was all over it.  And then a perfect 27-second clip fell into my lap and I couldn’t pass it up. I hereby mock myself.

The kids like to request songs while they’re in the tub.  And if they start demanding “bunny” or “hop-hop,” what they’re asking for is “Little Bunny Foo-Foo.”  M sings it for them, along with accompanying hand gestures.  And Rebecca, well, she picked them right up.

And for those of you who have trouble grabbing the video camera before the moment passes, I assure you she requested the song SO MANY times the other night, I had sufficient time to think it was funny, remember I wanted the video camera, run downstairs and get it, and get back up to the bathroom and catch it.  As you can see, she wasn’t done yet…

For next week, no particular theme. Just post whatever makes you happy! Freestyle!

Thursday Theater – Giggle-fest

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   May 7th, 2009

Welcome to Thursday Theater, everyone!  This week’s optional theme was: Giggles.  What got the giggles out for you this week?  Play along with Mr. Linky below…

I had some ideas when I set this theme, of things I could do to get my kids to laugh.  Turns out I didn’t need anything contrived, and the giggles presented themselves to me quite easily.  Why?  Because Gramps was here.  My dad is really great with my kids, and loves to do any number of things that make them laugh.  Here’s just a couple of examples…

Giggling with Gramps from Goddess in Progress on Vimeo.

Next week I’m setting another editing challenge: Short and Sweet. How much of a story can you convey in 30 seconds or less?  That’s right, half a minute.  Pick one small point/story/theme, and get out those virtual scissors and be ruthless in your editing.

OK, yeah.  You could just take a super short video clip, too.  And I won’t call you a cheater. At least, not to your face. :-)

Thursday Theater – Mad Skillz

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   April 30th, 2009

Thursday again, already? I seem to have a warped sense of time these days.  Anyways, welcome to Thursday Theater! Please play along and add your link to Mr. Linky.

This week’s optional theme was: Mad Skillz.  See the end of this post for next week’s theme.

Honestly, I feel like I got a whole lot of nothing on the video front this week.  Kiddos weren’t super cooperative, and I wasn’t in a very video kind of mood.  But I did manage this short clip of the kids and one of their new favorite activities: markers on the easel!  It’s kind of messy (“washable?” I’m not so sure…), but they’re getting a kick out of it.  Notice Daniel’s critique of his work (“messy!”) and Rebecca showing off her knowledge of colors at the end.  Enjoy!

Next week’s optional theme is: Giggles.  What makes you (or your kids) laugh? And can you catch it on video?  Good luck and happy filming!

Thursday Theater – What’s Your Soundtrack?

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (7)·   April 23rd, 2009

Welcome back! Just because it’s been a sparse posting week for me doesn’t mean I’m going to neglect Thursday Theater!  What about you? Will you play along this week?  Add your video link to Mr. Linky!

This week’s challenge was to add music to your video.  Adding a fun bit of music can make a video clip that much more enjoyable, and I love hunting through my iTunes library to find something that fits.  See the end of the post for next week’s challenge/theme.

My video was from Wednesday morning, a blessedly warm and sunny one after a rather rainy and horrifically toddler-esque Tuesday.  We went for a stroll at a nearby pond, and the kids had a grand time attempting to walk the dog, push the stroller, and make as big a mess out of as small a puddle as they could manage.  By the time we got home, I actually had to just throw their shoes in the washing machine.  At any rate, it was a nice break from the tantrums that have otherwise taken over this particular stage.  And in an effort at either optimism or irony, my musical choice is the “Nothin’ Blues” from this session’s Music Together CD.  Heh.  Enjoy.

Next week’s optional theme: Mad Skillz. What kinds of abilities or tricks do you (or your kids) have to show off? Get that video camera out and share it with us!
