Thursday Theater

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   April 16th, 2009

Welcome to Thursday Theater!  Please add your link to Mr. Linky and play along. This week’s optional theme: Furry Friends! Check the end of the post for next week’s theme.

It’s been a rough week here, on the illness and productivity front (thought my stomach bug was gone? Wrong!!).  I didn’t even manange to play along with my own theme, unless you count my dog’s brief cameo at the end of this video.  Alas, best laid plans…

I had the kids at the playground the other day and got to talking to another mom with a similarly-aged toddler and an older child.  She shared an exasperated look with me and made a comment about how this age makes for a heart-attack-inducing summer at the playground. So much energy and enthusiasm, not quite enough balance and coordination.  Next summer, she said, would be better.

In honor of her wisdom, I share with you just a few of the kids’ hijinks from a morning in our yard.  They love to swing, climb, run, ride, and crash… all day long. It’ll be a miracle if we make it through the season with only minimal injury.

Let the summer begin from Goddess in Progress on Vimeo.

As you can see, I had a bit of fun and added some music to this clip (maybe because I’m sick of hearing my own voice?). So that’s your challenge for next week: add a soundtrack!

Thursday Theater – Night, night!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   April 9th, 2009

Welcome back!  Wait, it’s Thursday already?  Yeesh.  Isn’t it strange how a day (or an hour) can seem so long, but then a week flies by?  Anyways….

This week’s optional theme was: Night, Night!

So please, play along!  Add the link to your video post to Mr. Linky (please link to the specific post, not just your blog’s main index), and don’t forget to link back here.  And remember, next week’s theme is listed at the end, so you have plenty of time to prepare.

My clip is just a small glimpse into our nightly bedtime routine: bath, brushing teeth, pajamas, and stories.  Editing remains challenging, but I’m finding it easier to cut things out.  I think because I’ve freed myself from the sense that I must tell the “whole” story with each thing I post. (A lesson I’m also starting to consider in general blog writing… sort of.)  Telling/showing the whole story takes entirely too long, and isn’t nearly as interesting to most people as it is to me.  Showing just a small amount of the story in a manageable number of words or amount of time is a lot more accessible.  Is it “missing” some big parts?  Sure. But that’s alright.

So, enjoy!

And, for next week’s theme: Furry Friends!  (Pets, stuffed animals, or any other favorites…)

Thursday Theater – Good morning, Sunshine!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (10)·   April 2nd, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  Please join in, post your own videos, add your link to Mr. Linky, and make sure to link back here.

This week’s optional theme is: Good morning, Sunshine! (And yes, starting today, I will post next week’s theme at the end of this post so you have more time…)

Mornings are kind of silly at my house.  Thankfully, the kids generally wake up in a pretty good mood, and tend to spend the first 10-15 minutes just running around the 2nd floor being goofy.  You’ll notice I didn’t follow my 1-minute rule (it’s almost exactly 2 minutes long), but hopefully it is interesting and moves along enough to hold people’s attention.

I actually feel like I’m already getting better at this video editing thing (still a long way to go, of course).  I started out with 15 minutes of footage.  When I started pulling out my favorite clips, I started to think more specifically about what I was trying to “say” with this clip.  It’s not the complete story of our morning, nor does it include all of the myriad cuteness that occured.  While it was hard to leave out any of the super cute stuff that was so very illustrative of my darling kids and their hilarious personalities… I was really trying to get the clip to a manageable length for the general blog readership, not the grandparents.  The discarded clips are not gone, they’re simply not published… yet.

Anyways, hope you get a kick out of it.

And, for next week’s theme…. let’s go to the other end of the day! Nighty-night!

Thursday Theater – O.M.G.

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (12)·   March 26th, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  Please, add your (direct) link to Mr. Linky below and play along!

So, what made you say O.M.G. and grab the video camera this week?

My choice was easy: my kids have started holding hands and it is by far the cutest thing in the whole wide world (well, it’s a close choice between that and the fact that they give each other kisses at bedtime…).  But even better is that sometimes instead of one left hand and one right hand, they sort of grab the opposite one.  And then start walking.  In circles.  It cracks me up every time, because sometimes they’re doing it to be funny, and sometimes it just happens.

At the beginning, we’ve got Daniel saying “han(d)! han(d)! Becca!” Rebecca thinks the whole thing is hilarious. And at the end, well, maybe he was a little dizzy…

O.M.G.

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (9)·   March 23rd, 2009

Right.  Posting may be a bit slow this week, lots of real-life stuff to deal with.  Including, but not limited to, the fact that my MOT club is having its sale this weekend and I have tons and tons of stuff to sort through and price.  Yipes!

I did want to make sure I throw out the optional theme for this week’s Thursday Theater: O.M.G.  That’s right, anything that made you say, “OMG, I have to get this on video.”  Whether unbearable cuteness, ungodly messes, a clever new trick, or something that just screams “document me!”  Don’t forget last week’s challenge: see if you can edit yourself and keep things short and sweet.

In the meantime, I feel just a little bit off.  So, apparently, does Rebecca.

Nice boots.

Thursday Theater – Chili Night

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (9)·   March 19th, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  Every week, we are here to practice our mad video skillz and take some time to document things in movement and sound.

Please add your links (preferrably a link directly to the blog post that contains your video) to Mr. Linky, and play along!  Also, anyone using Vimeo for video hosting is encouraged to join the group I’ve set up for us.

This week’s optional theme is: FOOD!  I also presented a challenge to you: make your clip one minute or shorter.  More on that challenge in a moment, but first…. my video for the week.  Last night was chili night at our house, almost always a hit with Rebecca (Daniel wasn’t into it).  And tons of fun as long as you remember that chili night very quickly becomes laundry night.  Check out how Rebecca has learned to blow on hot food, her commentary on making a mess, and her attention to detail when it’s time to clean up.

Chili Night from Goddess in Progress on Vimeo.

Now, why did I try to have you get your clip in at under a minute? Because I think, here in the blogosphere, many of us suffer from under-editing. Hey, it’s the nature of the beast. “It’s my website, and I can do whatever the hell I want.” And that’s cool.  But what I’m saying is that sometimes you need to consider your audience and edit, edit, edit.

This is especially true in the context of posting video.  Consider your audience.  If you’re sending a video to the grandparents, they probably don’t want you to leave out a single second of your two-month-old’s day.  Just set up a live webcam and they’ll be happy.  But for the blog… let’s put it this way.  I have 120 feeds in my Google Reader that I try to keep up with. I write for three or four blogs.  Oh, and I have two toddlers who need love, attention, snacks, and a ride to gymnastics.  As adorable as everyone else’s kids are, I really only have the available attention for the Cliff’s Notes version when stopping by your blog.

For this video, I started out with more than five minutes of footage of Rebecca eating chili.  Way, way too much. It’s not that interesting, even to me.  But getting it down to 57 seconds wasn’t easy.  I had to keep asking myself: “what’s my point? What story am I trying to tell, and does the entirety of each clip contribute to the story?”  OK, yeah, it’s just a toddler getting chili all over herself.  But you know what I mean.  I had some other bits of Daniel doing funny things with his spoon, and more cute clips of Rebecca blowing on her hot food. I thought they were adorable, and you might even have agreed.  But to keep them all would have made the video too long, and lots of people watching would just have checked out.  This way, I’d like to think, I got my point across before people got completely bored. It’s far from perfect, but that’s what practice is for, right?

Theme and a challenge

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (0)·   March 16th, 2009

Just a heads-up for those who would like to participate in this week’s Thursday Theater…

This week’s optional theme: Food!  Anything food-related.

And, for this week, your first challenge: make the clip under one minute long.  Use the editing software that came with your camera, use iMovie on your Mac, use online tools like One True Media.  Use whatever suits you, but get out those virtual scissors and EDIT!

See you then…

Thursday Theater

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (11)·   March 12th, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  This is my new weekly feature to help encourage each other to get more practice with our video skills.

Today’s optional theme is: SONG!  Do you or your kids have a particular favorite? Or do you just want to add some music to your videos?  Go for it!

Please add your links to Mr. Linky, below.  Also remember, use good Linky etiquette and please add the direct link to your video post, not just the general link to your blog’s main page!  And, if you’re on Vimeo, don’t forget to join our group.

As for me… I have some cute footage of my kids and their love for Wheels on the Bus.  But winter is apparently not done kicking my ass and I have what seems to be my 19th consecutive stomach bug.  So, I haven’t finished editing and uploading the video.  Hopefully I’ll manage it later today.  In the meantime, add your links and check out other people who are playing along!

EDITED TO ADD:

My video!  Wheels on the Bus is far and away the favorite song in my house right now.  They can tell when a verse is about to end and stage a preemptive “more! again!”  They also sometimes request the topic for the next verse, but disagree on their favorites.  And, lucky you, you get to listen to me sing. Clearly, being a mom has removed any sense of embarrassment that I might have once had.

Thursday Theater – Press Play!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (13)·   March 5th, 2009

Welcome to the first installment of Thursday Theater, my new video feature.  I started this because I want to practice using my video camera and editing the videos that I take.  I’m far from a pro, but I thought we could use this opportunity to try new things and encourage each other to build our skills.  Please, play along!  Mr. Linky is below for your linking enjoyment.

Each week, I will try to introduce a loose “theme,” which is totally optional.  This week: play!  Show us something related to playing, whether yourself, your kids, your dog, or whatever.  Interpret as you will.

I’d also like to ask a question each week and get everyone’s feedback in the comments section.  This week’s question:

Where do you host your video files for posting on your blog? Do you upload directly to your blog service (Blogger, WordPress, etc.)?  Do you use a file hosting service like YouTube or Vimeo? What do you like or dislike about the way you currently do things?

My answer: I have used YouTube, mostly because it’s the first thing you think of.  But today I’m giving Vimeo a try.  So far, video quality is nicer than YouTube, and it feels like there’s less of a mob mentality over there.  Heck, I even started a group for this here feature, so if you’re on Vimeo, please feel free to join.

And, finally, my video for today!  In the name of “playing,” this is my kids’ new favorite pastime: play-doh.  They very much like to roll it, and squish it (and narrate doing so).  And just for fun, the end of the video includes a little wiggle-dance from Daniel.  Enjoy!
