Thursday Theater – 30-second Rule

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Welcome to Thursday Theater! Please, add your link to Mr. Linky (below) and play along! Last week I left you with a short-and-sweet challenge: make your clip 30 seconds or less.

Of course, it was supposed to be an editing challenge, and I was all over it.  And then a perfect 27-second clip fell into my lap and I couldn’t pass it up. I hereby mock myself.

The kids like to request songs while they’re in the tub.  And if they start demanding “bunny” or “hop-hop,” what they’re asking for is “Little Bunny Foo-Foo.”  M sings it for them, along with accompanying hand gestures.  And Rebecca, well, she picked them right up.

And for those of you who have trouble grabbing the video camera before the moment passes, I assure you she requested the song SO MANY times the other night, I had sufficient time to think it was funny, remember I wanted the video camera, run downstairs and get it, and get back up to the bathroom and catch it.  As you can see, she wasn’t done yet…

For next week, no particular theme. Just post whatever makes you happy! Freestyle!

Thursday Theater – Giggle-fest

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Welcome to Thursday Theater, everyone!  This week’s optional theme was: Giggles.  What got the giggles out for you this week?  Play along with Mr. Linky below…

I had some ideas when I set this theme, of things I could do to get my kids to laugh.  Turns out I didn’t need anything contrived, and the giggles presented themselves to me quite easily.  Why?  Because Gramps was here.  My dad is really great with my kids, and loves to do any number of things that make them laugh.  Here’s just a couple of examples…

Next week I’m setting another editing challenge: Short and Sweet. How much of a story can you convey in 30 seconds or less?  That’s right, half a minute.  Pick one small point/story/theme, and get out those virtual scissors and be ruthless in your editing.

OK, yeah.  You could just take a super short video clip, too.  And I won’t call you a cheater. At least, not to your face. :-)

Thursday Theater – What’s Your Soundtrack?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Welcome back! Just because it’s been a sparse posting week for me doesn’t mean I’m going to neglect Thursday Theater!  What about you? Will you play along this week?  Add your video link to Mr. Linky!

This week’s challenge was to add music to your video.  Adding a fun bit of music can make a video clip that much more enjoyable, and I love hunting through my iTunes library to find something that fits.  See the end of the post for next week’s challenge/theme.

My video was from Wednesday morning, a blessedly warm and sunny one after a rather rainy and horrifically toddler-esque Tuesday.  We went for a stroll at a nearby pond, and the kids had a grand time attempting to walk the dog, push the stroller, and make as big a mess out of as small a puddle as they could manage.  By the time we got home, I actually had to just throw their shoes in the washing machine.  At any rate, it was a nice break from the tantrums that have otherwise taken over this particular stage.  And in an effort at either optimism or irony, my musical choice is the “Nothin’ Blues” from this session’s Music Together CD.  Heh.  Enjoy.

Next week’s optional theme: Mad Skillz. What kinds of abilities or tricks do you (or your kids) have to show off? Get that video camera out and share it with us!

Thursday Theater

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Welcome to Thursday Theater!  Please add your link to Mr. Linky and play along. This week’s optional theme: Furry Friends! Check the end of the post for next week’s theme.

It’s been a rough week here, on the illness and productivity front (thought my stomach bug was gone? Wrong!!).  I didn’t even manange to play along with my own theme, unless you count my dog’s brief cameo at the end of this video.  Alas, best laid plans…

I had the kids at the playground the other day and got to talking to another mom with a similarly-aged toddler and an older child.  She shared an exasperated look with me and made a comment about how this age makes for a heart-attack-inducing summer at the playground. So much energy and enthusiasm, not quite enough balance and coordination.  Next summer, she said, would be better.

In honor of her wisdom, I share with you just a few of the kids’ hijinks from a morning in our yard.  They love to swing, climb, run, ride, and crash… all day long. It’ll be a miracle if we make it through the season with only minimal injury.

As you can see, I had a bit of fun and added some music to this clip (maybe because I’m sick of hearing my own voice?). So that’s your challenge for next week: add a soundtrack!

Thursday Theater – Night, night!

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Welcome back!  Wait, it’s Thursday already?  Yeesh.  Isn’t it strange how a day (or an hour) can seem so long, but then a week flies by?  Anyways….

This week’s optional theme was: Night, Night!

So please, play along!  Add the link to your video post to Mr. Linky (please link to the specific post, not just your blog’s main index), and don’t forget to link back here.  And remember, next week’s theme is listed at the end, so you have plenty of time to prepare.

My clip is just a small glimpse into our nightly bedtime routine: bath, brushing teeth, pajamas, and stories.  Editing remains challenging, but I’m finding it easier to cut things out.  I think because I’ve freed myself from the sense that I must tell the “whole” story with each thing I post. (A lesson I’m also starting to consider in general blog writing… sort of.)  Telling/showing the whole story takes entirely too long, and isn’t nearly as interesting to most people as it is to me.  Showing just a small amount of the story in a manageable number of words or amount of time is a lot more accessible.  Is it “missing” some big parts?  Sure. But that’s alright.

So, enjoy!

And, for next week’s theme: Furry Friends!  (Pets, stuffed animals, or any other favorites…)

Thursday Theater – Good morning, Sunshine!

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  Please join in, post your own videos, add your link to Mr. Linky, and make sure to link back here.

This week’s optional theme is: Good morning, Sunshine! (And yes, starting today, I will post next week’s theme at the end of this post so you have more time…)

Mornings are kind of silly at my house.  Thankfully, the kids generally wake up in a pretty good mood, and tend to spend the first 10-15 minutes just running around the 2nd floor being goofy.  You’ll notice I didn’t follow my 1-minute rule (it’s almost exactly 2 minutes long), but hopefully it is interesting and moves along enough to hold people’s attention.

I actually feel like I’m already getting better at this video editing thing (still a long way to go, of course).  I started out with 15 minutes of footage.  When I started pulling out my favorite clips, I started to think more specifically about what I was trying to “say” with this clip.  It’s not the complete story of our morning, nor does it include all of the myriad cuteness that occured.  While it was hard to leave out any of the super cute stuff that was so very illustrative of my darling kids and their hilarious personalities… I was really trying to get the clip to a manageable length for the general blog readership, not the grandparents.  The discarded clips are not gone, they’re simply not published… yet.

Anyways, hope you get a kick out of it.

And, for next week’s theme…. let’s go to the other end of the day! Nighty-night!

Theme for the week

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

A quick note about this week’s optional theme for Thursday Theater:

Good morning, sunshine!

Get those cameras out nice and early, and show us something about your morning!

Thursday Theater – O.M.G.

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  Please, add your (direct) link to Mr. Linky below and play along!

So, what made you say O.M.G. and grab the video camera this week?

My choice was easy: my kids have started holding hands and it is by far the cutest thing in the whole wide world (well, it’s a close choice between that and the fact that they give each other kisses at bedtime…).  But even better is that sometimes instead of one left hand and one right hand, they sort of grab the opposite one.  And then start walking.  In circles.  It cracks me up every time, because sometimes they’re doing it to be funny, and sometimes it just happens.

At the beginning, we’ve got Daniel saying “han(d)! han(d)! Becca!” Rebecca thinks the whole thing is hilarious. And at the end, well, maybe he was a little dizzy…

Theme and a challenge

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Just a heads-up for those who would like to participate in this week’s Thursday Theater…

This week’s optional theme: Food!  Anything food-related.

And, for this week, your first challenge: make the clip under one minute long.  Use the editing software that came with your camera, use iMovie on your Mac, use online tools like One True Media.  Use whatever suits you, but get out those virtual scissors and EDIT!

See you then…

Thursday Theater

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Welcome, once again, to Thursday Theater!  This is my new weekly feature to help encourage each other to get more practice with our video skills.

Today’s optional theme is: SONG!  Do you or your kids have a particular favorite? Or do you just want to add some music to your videos?  Go for it!

Please add your links to Mr. Linky, below.  Also remember, use good Linky etiquette and please add the direct link to your video post, not just the general link to your blog’s main page!  And, if you’re on Vimeo, don’t forget to join our group.

As for me… I have some cute footage of my kids and their love for Wheels on the Bus.  But winter is apparently not done kicking my ass and I have what seems to be my 19th consecutive stomach bug.  So, I haven’t finished editing and uploading the video.  Hopefully I’ll manage it later today.  In the meantime, add your links and check out other people who are playing along!

EDITED TO ADD:

My video!  Wheels on the Bus is far and away the favorite song in my house right now.  They can tell when a verse is about to end and stage a preemptive “more! again!”  They also sometimes request the topic for the next verse, but disagree on their favorites.  And, lucky you, you get to listen to me sing. Clearly, being a mom has removed any sense of embarrassment that I might have once had.
