Mom and Me Meme

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   September 12th, 2008

My real-life buddy Giovanna has tagged me for the “Mom and Me” Meme.  You know I love me some memes, so here ya go.

First, post a picture of you and your kid(s):

This one is an attempt at a self-portrait on Thursday.  My camera doesn’t get quite far enough away, but there you have it.  Daniel on the left, and a corner of Rebecca’s face on the right.

1. How many children do you have?
Two, boy/girl twins.
2. What are their ages?
13 months.

3. What time do you start your day?
Around 6:15-6:30, though sometimes I don’t have to get the kids until closer to 7:00.
4. What do you eat for breakfast?
Frozen waffles along with the kids, or my latest kick is a fruit & yogurt smoothie (which the kids also like to share with me).
5. Do they watch TV?
A little.  I sometimes flip on the Today Show in the morning, Cash Cab in the evening, or sports on the weekend.  But not much.
6. What are their favorite activities?
Rebecca – walking! Or, climbing up the slide on our swingset, or “reading” her books.  Daniel – playing with whatever he’s not supposed to, climbing the stairs, swinging, just being carried.
7. Do you get a break during the day for some you time?
Only if/when they’re sleeping.  A skipped nap is such a bummer.
8. How do you end your day?
Vegging out, watching TV, messing around on the computer, cooking, doing laundry.  So exciting!!
9. What is your best parenting advice or tip?
It’s so important for mom and dad (or mom and mom, or whatever combo…) to be on the same page about the big stuff, even and especially in the infant days.  Which is not to say you have to do everything exactly the same way, but you have to fundamentally believe in the same things. There’s so much exhaustion and uncertainty and second-guessing in the first few months, it’s key to back each other up.
Also, don’t beat yourself up.  There’s many, many different paths to happy, healthy kids, and very few people actually live up to all of the theories and ideas they had before kids. Do your best, love your kids. They’ll be fine.
Finally, I’m supposed to tag 5 people. Hrm…
Beverly
Mamie
LauraC

Cynthia
And you, if you want to do it!  Just leave a comment and let me know…

Ask the Daddy

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (9)·   August 19th, 2008

Alright, blogosphere, I’m asking for your help.

If you read How Do You Do It?, my other blog, you may have noticed we’ve had a couple of daddies do guest posts recently.  I asked M if he wanted to join in.  Somewhat to my surprise, he actually is more than willing, and even somewhat intrigued by the idea.  As someone who isn’t normally into blogging, writing, or really much of any concentrated self-reflection, however, he is drawing a blank on what to write about.  [I don't mean to suggest he is not one to be thoughtful, I only mean he's not the journal-about-my-feelings type...]

So, want to help a daddy out?  Leave a comment with a possible topic, or even a question or set of questions I could use to “interview” him!  What have you always wanted to know about the mysterious Mr. M?  I can’t make any promises, but if you send me some interesting questions, I bet you’ll get interesting answers.

I don’t think we’re going to turn him into a regular blogger, but I’ll see if I can’t squeeze a guest post out of him from time to time.

Not that special.

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   August 11th, 2008

So, my friend Nancy over at the Zimmer Zoo has tagged me.  And we all know, I love me some memes.  Here we go:

The subject:
“6 UN-spectacular things about me”

The rules:
1. Link the person who tagged you.
2. Mention the rules on your blog.
3. Tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours.
4. Tag 6 following bloggers by linking them.
5. Leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger’s blogs letting them know they’ve been tagged.

Here you have it, six un-spectacular things about yours truly:

  1. I am the finance person in my household.  If I left it to M to pay the bills, we’d be out of house and home with the late fees.  It’s just not his thing.  I, on the other hand, am more likely to pay something the very day I get it.  I used to track everything in Microsoft Money, so I knew exactly how much was charged on my credit card that month, etc.  So imagine how pissed I was when M and I went to get our first apartment and his credit score was higher than mine!  I almost lost it, and he teases me about it to this day.
  2. I believe there is only one true way to make a bratwurst: boil it in beer first, then get a nice little char on the grill.  For those of you who aren’t from the midwest and haven’t done this yet, you’re welcome.
  3. I like to do laundry.  Well, it’s less about liking to do it, and more that I don’t like it when other people do it.  It was an exercise in letting go when I became too pregnant to go up and down the basement stairs with the basket.
  4. I was an un-spectacular softball player.  I enjoyed it as a young kid, maybe because my mom played on a team for several years when I was little.  I tried out for the team in high school and was on the freshman team (my high school was so big there were 3 teams: freshman, JV, and Varsity).  I was the 2nd-string right-fielder.  Though, by the end, I was starting center field.  I actually got the “most improved” award, that’s how super cool I was.  In subsequent years, rehearsals for the spring musical orchestra won out over softball.
  5. I don’t like baths.  I have never found them especially relaxing, mostly kind of cramped and uncomfortable in the hard tub.  And I really dislike them for the purposes of cleaning.  Why would I want to sit in the dirt that I just cleaned off?
  6. I’m re-addicted to quilting.  After finally finishing my brothers and my kids’, I’m starting two new ones.  One is for my new niece (hopefully I’ll finish it by Christmas, even if I get distracted), and one is because I just couldn’t resist the fabric when I was at the quilt shop this morning.  I had to leave before I bought even more…

Alright, there you have it.  Un-spectacular.  I hereby tag six more spectacular people, and dare them to find something boring!

  1. Carrie
  2. Tracey
  3. Beverly
  4. High-Heeled Mama
  5. Mamie
  6. Krissy

Tech support request

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   July 14th, 2008

I’m calling out to the blogosphere for a little help.  I’m considering buying my own domain and hosting my blog there, in part because I want a little more creative control over layout and things.  And while I’m reasonably tech-savvy, I want to make sure I understand what I’m doing.  Anyone want to walk me through this?  I know certain things, like the difference between buying a domain name and actually hosting the site.  But I’m not sure about the different hosting options (amount of storage space, etc).  So…

Anyone have a favorite hosting service? Why, and what should I be looking for?

If I continue to use WordPress, which I like, will I be able to have fairly complete control over layout and widgets and things?

Any pitfalls or gimmicks I should look out for?

Any issues with the fact that I use a Mac?

Thanks!

You really like me?

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   June 21st, 2008

So, I’m checking my long list o’ blogs on Google Reader the other day. And what do I see on the lovely High-Heeled Mama‘s site?

A little hug, just for me! (Well, me and several other people, but also me…) Aww, thanks! The rules, as I understand them, are to just spread the love to 10 other bloggers. Let the love-fest begin:

  1. Cheryl – I absolutely gobbled up her book when I was first pregnant with twins, and have since told every (twin) pregnant mom I know to read it. Now we’re total blog-buddies, and maybe we’ll even have a little real-life meet-up later in the summer.
  2. Mamie – Her boys are adorable, and her ability to continue crafting with two toddlers is making me really itchy to get back to quilting and yarnwork.
  3. LauraC – Always love her honesty and perspective, love having her as a fellow HDYDI mom.
  4. Mommy, Esq. – Pregnant and a member of my MOT club, we totally read each other’s blogs and exchange the occasional email, but have yet to manage to meet in real life. Eventually…
  5. Bev – A college friend, I love reading about her life on the opposite coast with her adorable son, Jack.
  6. Emomily – Fellow HDYDI mom, I love the activities she comes up with! Must bookmark for when my kids are older…
  7. What a Card – Another friend from my MOT club, and current local produce maven.
  8. Cynthia – We “met” on the Babycenter bulletin boards because we were both due in August. And now she’s adding another boy to her family, how super exciting!
  9. Jane – Yet another person from my blog-tastic MOT club, I always get a kick out out of her tales of two toddler girls. Honest, witty, snarky… an excellent combo.
  10. Life as I Know It – Love her style, love her honesty.

Meme madness

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (8)·   June 19th, 2008

I’m weird.  I kind of like memes.  I don’t know why, though I think it’s related to the fact that as a child, I always wanted to be “interviewed.”  Maybe I just wanted to feel like someone thought I was so interesting that they wanted to ask me more questions?  Eh, who knows.

Anyways, Snickollet (not a huge meme fan) tagged everyone by tagging no one today, so I figured I’d jump on that bandwagon.  Here goes, a meme in 4′s…

*edited, I forgot one!*

Four jobs I’ve had

  1. Ice cream scooper and barista
  2. Escort!  (we drove people on and off campus between 8pm and 2am)
  3. High school guidance counselor
  4. College admissions counselor

Four movies I could watch over and over

  1. The Birdcage
  2. Austin Powers, the Spy Who Shagged Me
  3. When Harry Met Sally…
  4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (the book is still better, though…)

Four places I have lived

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Glencoe, IL
  3. Northfield, MN
  4. Somerville, MA

Four TV shows I like

  1. Top Chef
  2. Project Runway
  3. Cash Cab
  4. What Not to Wear (Can someone nominate me, please?  I’m only half-joking.)

Four favorite foods

  1. Sushi
  2. Ice cream
  3. Cookies
  4. Bratwurst (cooked in beer before you finish them on the grill, of course)

Four places I would rather be (I’m not sure I’d rather be there, but places I like to be…)

  1. Chicago
  2. Skiing in the rockies
  3. Disneyworld
  4. Ireland (never been)

Four people I’m tagging

  1. Beverly
  2. Mommy, Esq.
  3. The Zimmer Zoo
  4. What a Card

Playlists

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (8)·   June 17th, 2008

Susan, over at Life, Love & Labradors, wrote a post today about music for Labor & Delivery. She’s pregnant with twins and packing her hospital bag, and looking for suggestions for music.

I was totally going to do this back when I was pregnant. I was sure I’d come up with great playlists and have my iPod with me in the hospital. It never happened. Didn’t even occur to me to bring my iPod in my hospital bag, though in retrospect, it probably would have been a good choice instead of just sitting there in pain.

Anyways, I was going to write a comment on Susan’s post. And then it got way too long, so I decided to make a post of my own. Following are some tunes I’d recommend, depending on the mood and energy you’re looking for. If you have suggestions of your own, head over to Susan’s blog and let her know!

For peace, calm, and quiet, when you want to slow your nerves and get some rest:

  • The Bach Cello Suites, Yo-Yo Ma. There are six suites, each with six movements. But if you only get one suite, get the first. And if you only get one track, get the first movement of the first suite. Even if you don’t know much about classical music, it will probably sound familiar to you. This is my go-to whenever I want to be quiet and calm.
  • Voice of the Violin, Joshua Bell. Bell takes a number of famous vocal pieces and performs them on the violin. Just plain lovely and lyrical. What my mom and I sometimes call “Sunday Morning Music.”
  • Now That I’ve Found You, Allison Kraus. She’s a little country (and I’m a little rock & roll, apparently?), but I really enjoy this album and find her very soothing.
  • Unplugged, Eric Clapton. You can only rock so hard when you have acoustic guitars. This is great for familiar songs in a mellow way.
  • Finding Neverland, Motion Picture Soundtrack, Jan Kaczmarek. Even if you haven’t seen this movie (oh my lord did I cry…), the music is just wonderful. All instrumental.

For passing the time, maybe post-epidural while you’re waiting for things to get going, I’d be in favor of things that are longer and tell a story, instead of a bunch of 3-minute songs:

  • Rent, Wicked, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Cast Recordings. Musicals that have very little dialougue interludes are good (aka operettas), because the songs basically take you through the whole show. Gilbert & Sullivan would probably work too, if you’re into that. Or West Side Story. Whatever you’re familiar with and enjoy.
  • If you enjoy classical music, complete symphonies are also good. Some of my favorites: Dvorak Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”), Beethoven Symphonies No. 6 and 7.

For getting pumped up, I like something good and loud, or even some of my guilty pleasures:

  • 1812 Overture, Tchaikovsky. Yes, you know this one. The Boston Pops plays it every year for the 4th of July. It’s nice and long, sometimes as much as 18 or so minutes. If at all possible, get a recording with the actual cannons at the end, it always gets me going.
  • Symphony No. 5, 4. Allegro non Troppo, Shostakovich. The fourth movement of Shostakovich’s 5th symphony is just crazy. And it sounds like movie music. That and Dvorak’s 9th Symphony, and you’ll know where John Williams got his inspiration for most of Steven Spielberg’s movies.
  • Ah, guilty pop pleasures. These are some of the ones on my playlist of “can’t not move” songs, or ones that otherwise just make me plain happy. A random selection of some of my iTunes favorites. I have elected not to explain or make excuses for any of them, thankyouverymuch.
    • Toxic, Britney Spears
    • Boom Shak-a-lak, Apache Indian
    • Mambo No. 5, Lou Bega
    • Hella Good and Hey Baby, No Doubt
    • Gone Daddy Gone, Gnarls Barkley
    • Come on Over, Christina Aguilera
    • Let’s Go Crazy, Prince
    • Come on Eileen, Dexy’s Midnight Runners
    • Pump It, Black Eyed Peas
    • Mamma Mia, ABBA
    • Groove is in the Heart, Dee-Lite
    • Rockafeller Skank, Fatboy Slim
    • When I’m Up (I Can’t Get Down), Great Big Sea
    • Stitched Up, Herbie Hancock feat. John Mayer
    • Geek in the Pink, Jason Mraz
    • Are You Gonna Be My Girl, Jet
    • Shake Your Tail Feather, Ray Charles feat. the Blues Brothers
    • Oye Como Va, Santana
  • Other than that, it’s all about your favorites.  Whatever you know the best and makes you happy.  I didn’t mention them individually, but my iPod is always fully stocked with my entire BNL collection, no surprise.

So, dear readers, what are some of your favorites?  Songs you’d love to have with you in Labor & Delivery, or any other stressful situation? Pass them along here, pass them along on Susan’s blog…

Seven more random things

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (2)·   April 10th, 2008

Alright, it appears the Seven Random Things meme is rampant in the mom blogging circuit these days. Not only did I do it last month, but I’ve now been tagged twice: by Cheryl and Lissa. Rules are as follows:

  1. Link to your tagger and post these rules on your blog.
  2. Share seven facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
  3. Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
  4. Let them know they are tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

So, I suppose I’ll try to come up with seven more random things about yours truly. Today I’m going with a music theme. I suppose that makes it a little less random, but so be it. I need structure.

  1. My very first live concert was Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine. I think it might have been 1987, and it was at the Poplar Creek Music Theater in Illinois. We had lawn seats. I’m pretty sure I saw her a second time a year or two later.
  2. I was a huge New Kids on the Block fan around 6th and 7th grade. Strangely, my middle school seemed otherwise immune to the phenomenon. So I was the only weirdo in my school (practically) who was into them, and suffered a fair amount of humiliation. It did not deter me from literally covering every inch of my bedroom wall with posters from Teen Beat and the like. I will not be going to the reunion show, though I did see them in concert back in the day… 1990, I think? Holy shit, that was 18 years ago. Wow.
  3. Other… interesting acts I’ve seen in person: Paula Abdul, the aforementioned New Kids, and Barry Manilow. I later redeemed myself with U2, Eric Clapton, Peter Gabriel, the first Lilith Fair, and many others.
  4. I still remember the date of the U2 show I saw: September 15, 1992. ZooTV “Outside Broadcast” tour. I was a freshman in high school, went with my friend and her mom (friend and I were on the lawn, her mom and mom’s friend were in the pavilion…), and it was the first time I ever smelled pot. We thought it was so scandalous!
  5. In the first half of high school, I went through a strangely concurrent U2 and Peter Gabriel phase. Many a mix tape were born. U2 lost me with Zooropa, and Peter Gabriel, it turns out, is kind of a weird dude.
  6. I have seen Barenaked Ladies eleven times since my first show in 1998. Hands down, my favorite concerts. They’re awesome live, and are easily my favorite band.
  7. Speaking of BNL shows, I once bought tickets to a show in Rochester, New York. I was new to Boston, hadn’t made many friends, so had a little too much time on my hands to become a tad obsessed with the band. In between the purchasing and the actual show, I started dating M. We had been together less than a month, and he drove to Rochester with me and we went to the show (front row!). If that wasn’t crazy enough, my dad, stepmom, and stepsister happened to be in Rochester (of all places!) visiting colleges, so M got to not only go with me to a BNL show (which he liked just fine, but he’s not a concert person), but meet my parents. Not bad for dating about three weeks.

Hrm, now I have to tag seven people… let’s see if I can find that many who haven’t done this recently!

  1. Krissy at Two is Better than One
  2. J at $20 Bet
  3. High Heeled Mama at High Heels and High Chairs
  4. Life as I Know It
  5. Jennie at Preteens, Toddlers and Newborns, Oh My
  6. Cynthia at The Journey
  7. The Station Managers at You’re Watching Adelevision

Seven things about me

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (6)·   March 20th, 2008

Forgive the sparse posting this week. I’m feeling a little out of sorts, a little behind on things. Up to my nose in laundry. I’m also discovering that I have a potentially finite amount of blogging energy, some of which is now taken up by my twice-weekly posts over at How Do You Do It?. Anyways, things are going well here, just not feeling particularly inspired. Doesn’t help that, though they say it’s the first day of Spring, it’s 43 degrees, windy, and raining here. Bleh. So, to have something to write about, I’m going to borrow from LauraC and do the “Seven random facts” meme. Here’s a few totally un-twin-related facts about yours truly:

  1. I play the double bass. It used to be such a big part of my life that I even started college as a music (education) major. The major lasted one semester, and I haven’t taken the poor thing out of its case in nearly three years. Maybe next year I’ll find another orchestra to play with.
  2. I was the Rush Chair (OK, VP Membership) of my sorority in college. I never imagined I would join a sorority, much less encourage others to do the same. And yet, knowing the person I am now, it makes perfect sense. But I never wore pearls to class, thankyouverymuch.
  3. I was an extra in an episode of Law & Order. I’m at the very end, in the courtroom, in a blue suit. I was a “court reporter.” Shockingly, I’m not listed in the credits. :-) But spending the day with a room full of professional extras was… enlightening. A weird bunch of folks, let me tell you.
  4. I’m allergic to melons. Melons, of all things! Canteloupe, honeydew, watermelon, whatever. It was a late-developing allergy (didn’t start until I was a teenager), and it’s not severe, but still. Have you ever tried to get a fruit salad at a store or restaurant without melons in it? Harder than you’d think.
  5. On 11/11/11, I will turn 33. My dad and I figured this out when I was like 8 years old, and I’ve been looking forward to it ever since. Weird that it’s less than four years away now… what will I do after that?!
  6. I have 30 blood-related first cousins. Not counting step-cousins, cousins by marriage, or any of that. I remember being very proud at the age of 9 when I realized I could name them all. I don’t understand people whose Christmas involves fewer than 45 people in the house.
  7. I love spreadsheets. Yes, spreadsheets. Nothing better than a well-organized, sorted, perfectly aligned spreadsheet. You should have seen my wedding spreadsheet, with tabs for the guest list, seating chart, meal choices, thank yous… I have a majorly anal-retentive side.

Alrighty, part of this deal is that I now get to tag 7 other people to do the same thing! I hereby tag Beverly, Carrie, Giovanna, Jenni, Darrah, Tracey, and Krissy. (And anyone else who wants to do it, just leave a comment so I can link to you!)
