Only the best for my baby

By Liz · October 20th, 2010

I had my big ultrasound last Friday and everything looked good with the wee new baby-to-be. To my surprise (and frustration), the ultrasound tech pronounced herself “75-80% sure” it’s a girl.  Surprise, because I was thoroughly convinced it was going to be a boy, as was the rest of my family.  Frustration, because I do NOT care for 20% uncertainty, whether boy OR girl!  It’s making me a little gun-shy on proclaiming things for one gender or the other, but I decided to just go for it and pull fabrics.

Fabric, pulled

Oh, that’s right. I pulled out almost my entire hoarded stash of Heather Ross (not counting Far Far Away, that’s her sister’s quilt).  It’s mostly Mendocino with a bit of Lightning Bugs thrown in.  I only took out the orange/blue/brown dots and stripes and the blue dogs.  All of the pink and fishy prints stayed in.

I may have even found inspiration this morning on what to do with it.  From Ashley, of course.

What do you think? Take any of the prints out? (Looking at the stack, I wonder if I need to pull that dark purple, or find another one to add.) Add solids? Leave it as is?  Any other quilt design you’d do?  I haven’t cut anything yet…

Congrats! (though I hear you on the frustration of them not being more certain – I have my big ultrasound next week and I’m worried I’ll hear the same kind of thing!)
Lovely fabrics – they’re sure to make for a really gorgeous baby quilt! :)

The deep reddish one third from the right doesn’t seem to fit in for me. You have a solid tie-in between the fabrics with your pinks and oranges. I wonder if a light to medium blue (slightly darker than the third in from the left fishy print) would work for the framing color for Ashley’s quilt pattern. She uses white, but your prints might be washed out if you use white as you have several that have white as the predominate background color. Adding more pink or orange may tip the overall color feel for the quilt, but you could certainly do it.

Congrats on your healthy baby, whether it’s a boy or girl. :) I would be extremely frustrated with that lack of certainty. However, I never take the techs word 100% on the gender of my babies. I know too many people who were told their baby was X and the baby turned out to be Y. So I use it as a guideline…

I agree with the above commenter, the dark one sticks out a bit too much. So I would either add few more darks to balance it out or pull it out. I would also add another dark/bright pink. Also agree that a white sashing might make you lose some of your prints because they are already so white. Lovely selection. I think these will make a great baby girl quilt. If you do end up having a boy, you are welcome to send it my way. ;) We are having a girl(?) in 2 months so it would be no problem to take it off your hands…

Congrats! and that’s a bit stinky about 20%… how can they not be sure?

I wouldn’t use all of these together, unless you’re going to add a lot more variety and have it very, very scrappy. I’ve seen a couple other photos of quilts that used lots of HR prints and they didn’t all go together, in my opinion.

The ones I would omit are the maroon kelp print and the turquoise seahorses (it’s pretty much the only fabric with that color in your pile). Maybe if you keep the orange seahorses in the quilt, you could make a pillow (or something) with the orange and turquoise seahorses, then you’d be able to add that fabric but still have it “go”.

But you know, it’s all up to you :) have fun whatever you decide!

Congrats on your 80% girl ;) And it’s awesome that everything looks well also. That’s what you want to hear, hey.
I agree with the above posters, I’d take out the dark one third from the right.
I don’t have any pattern suggestions as I’m a very newbie quilted, but I look forward to seeing what you create.

These fabrics are gorgeous. I am not very good at choosing fabrics yet but I do agree that the dark pink/purple one does pop out more than the others. I have just starred that quilt pattern to try with some Amy Butler Love prints.
    Congratulations on the ultrasound.

I love the material. Where do you buy yours? I really need to sit down and make some quilts, but I have too many other projects in the works, sewing and others. I also agree that the dark fabric seems to stand out. I love that I noticed the quilting part of your blog!

Congrats on the pregnancy! I agree completely with Heidi above. I was thinking adding more turquoise/blue would really add a lot to the fabrics you’ve chosen. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished quilt!
