Salad Scissor Winners!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (4)·   October 26th, 2009

You guys are awesome.  I love how many people came out of the woodwork for a pair of salad scissors.  In fact, people were so enthused, I decided to give away two of them.  The first winner, thanks to Random.org:

saladscissors1

#24: Mommy, Esq!  For the record, she votes for candied nuts in a salad.  I LOVE making candied walnuts and mixing them with greens, granny smith apple, craisins, and goat cheese.  With a balsamic-dijon vinaigrette.  Super tasty, though not as friendly as I might like for the ol’ diet.  Ah well.

Winner the second:

saladscissors2

#14: Nancy!  She votes for the heavy stuff at the salad bar, thereby increasing the percentage of your paycheck that you fork over to Whole Foods (cucumber, garbanzo beans, etc.).  Yum.

And, seriously… you both live about 10 minutes from my house.  So instead of paying Williams-Sonoma to ship them, I’m just going to hit the mall and drop them off at your front door. :-)

Thanks to everyone for entering along!  I could hardly believe I had so many people reading.  Leave comments more often, would ya?  And get thee to a Williams-Sonoma and get yourself a pair of those scissors. I’m telling you, I LOVE them!

How to eat more salads

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (36)·   October 22nd, 2009

I have a major vegetable problem.  In that I don’t eat nearly enough of them (and neither do my kids, by extension). I don’t have a lot of interesting ways to prepare them, I’m not particularly adventurous in trying new ones. It’s not a good thing.

Enter the always versatile Salad.  Salad is a good thing. Lots of different veggies in one place, endless possibilities.  The go-to lunch of any good dieter.  So why do I have such a mental block on them?  I have great intentions. I bring home a head of lettuce, some tomato, cucumber, bell pepper, broccoli, etc.  And it just sits and goes bad in my vegetable drawer, because making a turkey sandwich sounds like a lot less work.  Oy, the washing and the chopping and the putting away half of a chopped cucumber because you don’t need it all, but hope it won’t go bad before you want to use it again…. this can’t just be me, right?

My other issue is that, as well as I try to dice up the individual components, it never seems to combine as well as I might like.  Even when I hit the almighty Salad Bar, the pieces are just too big.  I don’t want one big honking mouthful of broccoli, followed by an enormous slice of cucumber, and then an unwieldy whole leaf of lettuce.

Take, for instance, this lovely box o’ roughage that I picked up at Whole Foods yesterday:

Salad Scissors

Lots of great color and variety, but ugh.

ENTER: the Salad Scissors.  (Keep reading if you want to win a pair!)

Salad Scissors

My mom had a pair of these bad boys, and I instantly knew I wanted them. Two scissor blades with a sort of scoop on one side to hold veggies in place and let you toss them around. Lucky me, she had already gotten me a pair for Christmas.  Wohoo!  Just take your bowl or box of veggies, and start chopping away.

Salad Scissors

Go nuts. Get all of those giant cucumber slices and wedges of bell pepper. Chop the lettuce into little bits, and get the cherry tomatoes, too.  Within a minute, you have this gorgeous mess:

Salad Scissors

Everything in tiny little pieces, all mixed together.  I am so much happier, I can’t even tell you.  Just one bite, and I get a little lettuce, some carrot, some onion… everybody just gets along.  And, as an added bonus, I find it much easier to distribute dressing, so you can just use the 2 tablespoons you’re supposed to use, instead of ending up with globs on one leaf of lettuce and a whole lot of dry broccoli.

Salad Scissors

Et voila, lunch is served and you get your nice chopped salad at home.

So, what do you think? Do you want to win a pair for yourself?  Leave me a comment on this post and tell me either what your favorite salad ingredient is, or your favorite vegetable dish.  I need some ideas!  The contest will close on Monday, October 26 at 5PM Eastern.  U.S. folks only, please, as my beloved Williams-Sonoma does not ship overseas.

And if you’re wondering about disclosure, nobody paid me for this or sent me these things to give away.  I just really like them, and will be swiping no one’s credit card but my own.  Enjoy!

Halloween Town Giveaway!

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (5)·   October 14th, 2009

One nice thing about making your contact info available on your blog is that you can sometimes get the inside scoop on some really cool things. (You also get very weird things, but we’re going to ignore those.) One of those very cool things fell into my lap recently, and I get to pass it along to you guys!

On Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, there is an awesome Halloween party/festival going on in Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center.  Halloween Town is sponsored by iParty and is a benefit for the Kids Fund at Boston Medical Center.  There’s all kinds of activities for toddlers all the way through older kids.  Trick or treating, a haunted mine, face painting and crafts, and even live performances, including the awesome Dan Zanes & Friends.  No joke, it looks like an absolute blast!

So, are you local? Do you want to go??  I have a family four-pack of tickets to give away!  Please leave a comment telling me what your kids are going to be for Halloween!  And for an extra entry, tweet all about it (don’t forget to include me, @etowndz, in the tweet) and leave an extra comment saying you’ve done just that.

Entries close this Friday (October 16) at 5PM, at which point I will pick a winner at random.

And if you don’t win, you can order tickets online and save $2 off the at-the-door price (kids and seniors are $14 in advance, adults are $17, and children 3 and under are free!).

Crafty Giveaway Goodness

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (3)·   May 27th, 2009

I’m going to put on my crafty hat for a minute, and let you guys know about a whole TON of giveaways going on this weekend.  There’s a blog called Sew, Mama, Sew!, and they’re hosting this party.  Head to their site and find a giant list of blogs giving away handcrafted items, handcrafted items + supplies, and sewing + knitting supplies.

I decided not to give anything away this time. I’m new enough to the quilting scene and have enough works in progress that it was unrealistic.  But man oh man will I be entering a lot of these giveaways!

Entries go from today through the end of the weekend.  Good luck, and let me know if you’re a lucky winner!  Or, just send lucky vibes my way.

And feel free to check out what I’m up to at teeny tiny quilts.  Or buy something from my Etsy shop! Or request a custom item, just like LauraC did!

Giveaway! LeapFrog Tag Reader

By Goddess in Progress · Comments (51)·   March 15th, 2009

And now, for something completely different!

I’ve gotten such a cool opportunity for a giveaway, I’m all excited to share it with you.  You see, it’s National Reading Month, and I’m not sure there are many causes more worthy of celebration.  M and I were both big readers growing up, wasting pair after pair of batteries in our flashlights, reading entirely too late into the night.  We can only hope to inspire the same willful disobedience in our kids, who seem to be getting a good start as they ask for more and more stories every night (and morning, and afternoon).  For as tiring as two toddlers can be, I can never turn down a request to read a book.

catinhatWell, the folks at LeapFrog are all over this.  Head over to their National Reading Month page and you can pledge to read a certain number of hours with your kids this month.  And to celebrate, they’re letting little ol’ me give away one of their Tag Readers.  It comes bundled with three books, including The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs & Ham.  How cool!  I think it’s great to have more ways for different kids to interact with books, and this is a nifty tool to help encourage independence in young readers. (Not to mention like a $75 value……)

Here’s the rules for the giveaway. First, check out Christy’s review at About.com’s Family Computing site.  Leave a comment below between now and Sunday, March 22 at 5pM Eastern, telling me one thing you learned about the Tag Reader from that review that you didn’t know before, and also what book you most hope they have included in their library.

For additional entries, you can tweet all about it (just don’t forget to include me: @etowndz), and/or write your own blog post and be sure to link back here.  Just leave an additional comment for each additional entry (no more than one Twitter entry per person, per day, please).

Remember, this ends next Sunday!  Good luck!

Also, be sure to check out Christy’s Family Computing blog for lots of super info and reviews on technology and kids.  And, check out the other mom blogs featured that will be participating in this giveawaytagreader!

Housewarming Party!

By Goddess in Progress ·   October 31st, 2008

Welcome, welcome, to my new blog home!  I decided to grab myself a little piece of internet real estate and build a cute house on it.  I hope you like it.  Big credit and thank you to Nicole at Apron Strings Aflutter for the design.

So, here we are, and I’m throwing myself a little housewarming party!  In fact, I’m celebrating with my first-ever giveaway. For two lucky readers: a $20 iTunes gift certificate!  That’s right, you can get yourself the new AC/DC album or some old Schoolhouse Rock clips or whatever makes you happy.

Here’s what I ask of you to help me get this party started, and to enter yourself to win the gift card: please leave a comment, and if you’re feeling extra generous, give me a little link-love on your own site and send your friends.  It’s a big open-house here, people.  As it’s a new site, nearly all commenters will need to be manually approved, so please be patient. I’ll get to them as fast as my fingers allow!  Deadline for the iTunes giveaway is 5pm (Eastern) on Monday, November 3.

Now, for a little housekeeping business.  Please update bookmarks and blogrolls to the new address: www.goddessinprogressblog.com. To subscribe and follow using a feed reader, hit me up on Feedburner.

I’ve still got some cleaning and unpacking to do, including fixing old links and moving photos around.  But all of the old entries are here, and the old Blogspot and WordPress.com sites will be shutting down soon.  Welcome to the new place!  Put your feet up and get comfortable.  After all, NaBloPoMo starts tomorrow…
